The federal government shutdown that happened for two weeks in October of 2013 had a big impact on the economy. Congress failed to pass legislation that that funds government spending in which the impact affected businesses, jobs, and billions of dollars that were lost during the event. Many people dealt with the hardship of the shutdown due to the fact that the money that was stalled provided their necessities of life.
The federal employees were furloughed which left hundreds of thousands of people on a leave of absence without pay. That is a big factor because without pay people without a check couldn’t feed themselves or their family let allow afford to pay their bills. It could of pose a major problem for some because not all bill collectors or even landlords will be sympathetic or understanding when it can to making sure they get their payments on time. Millions of people were impacted by the shutdown that relied on programs and services such as IRS and the national transportation safety board. IRS’s processing of returns and refunds were delayed since workers were unable to work and couldn’t allow the tax processing system to be programmed and tested in the proper time for it to take for it to be done. The postponement of the refunds that people counted on was difficult to handle since the money was depended on by most of them. National transportation safety board wasn’t able to investigate airplane accidents which are a major problem as far being able to prevent those accidents from happening again to other planes. Furthermore, the FDA was cancelled from doing what they needed to do to inspect and make sure that nothing hazardous can affect the lives of people wellbeing.

The government shutdown was a major part and will be an important factor in our history in the future. I don’t believe that the possibility of this incident will occur again due to the simple fact that the economy has suffered tremendously and affected the many lives of Americans. The devastation had an impact on federal funded program such as Head Start Program that provided education and other services to low-income families. This should be awake up call to the government to take the necessary precautions to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again. It is unfair to the people who have suffered because they were temporarily laid off without pay and for those who depended on the funds from the government.
