Willa Cather ’s novel My Ántonia brings light to the world of immigration in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many sought for the American dream but stubble upon many obstacles. Antonia the main character faces struggles as a young and old. From language barriers, poverty, harsh living conditions, and her father’s death. Besides those few points, she also comes upon a divide of social and economic classes, as well as criticism. The story sets from Nebraska, and Europe. Immigration in the late 1800s and early 1900s rose when immigrants came to America in hope of the American dream; in addition to the dream, immigrants also sought for a change in social, political and environmental movements. Europe had only offered little land; America was the only hope for a new life for the voyagers. Most immigrants don't realize after you step to America it took more effort to live the dream. Rough snow snowstorms, and hot desert days in the summer that made it hard to harvest. Likewise, their living conditions brought many situations in their journey to the American Dream. A lot of wild creatures like snakes, grasshoppers, and other wildlife animals came with living it these brutal conditions. These unstable conditions made it easier for a natural disaster to destroy the gods or dugouts. Farming didn’t become easier also, crops were harder to produce which means immigrants had little to no food. As many immigrants came over from horrible conditions to America they still faced many natural disasters like flood, winter storms, rain and many other natural events that damaged their sense of livelihood.
