A lie is a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive. Some people believe lying is never justified, like Immanuel Kant a german philosopher from the 18 century . Others believe that lying is always justified, or believe that lying is only justified in certain situation. In my opinion, lying is not ever justified no matter the situation.
In an excerpt by Sissela Bok, Rejecting All Lies : Immanuel Kant, Bok explains Kant’s argument that lying is a given right to another person. In the excerpt it argues that ,“Truthfulness in statements which cannot be avoided is the formal duty of an individual to everyone, however great may be the disadvantage.” Many people lie to avoid a disadvantage for themselves but Kant has a different view. Mary put in, “ Jayson’s mom told him that the doctors had just diagnosed her with cancer. She asks Jayson not to tell his dad because the stress could cause a deadly heart attack. He agreed to say nothing and pretended everything was fine.” In this situation I am fully against it and believe it is fully unjustified. This is unjustified because the mother should have not told her son that to lie to his father by not tell him the truth and by acting like nothing happened. The mother and son should have told the father because this is a life-altering event that the whole family should know about and spend what ever time she may have left together. This real life situation ties in with the idea that lying is never acceptable by show an example when lying should not be done and better way to solve a problems in real life without
