How can a country’s economic development affect the way people interact with their environment? The power of nature can be overwhelming whether you living in a developed or developing nation. Hurricanes are always devastating wherever you are and whenever the hurricane takes place. Recently, in late September into mid October, hurricane Matthew struck the world and left devastating affects to some nations around the world. Hurricane Matthew first hit the western part of Africa then came towards near the Caribbean and the land of Haiti. Afterwards, the hurricane roared up to the western part of the United States and eventually bounced back into the Atlantic Ocean and stopped. Hurricane Matthew hit Florida on October 7, 2016. It has been the first major hurricane for Florida in eleven years. This is important because the hurricane also changed the people of Florida because people in certain places were told to move aways to safer places that were in weaker categories. Still, some people decided to take their chances and hoped for the best. However, the hurricane will disrupt the citizens who leave because they will have to leave most of their belonging and their shelter. This is important because there are many negative affects whether you are leaving or staying. There was flooding of streets and many power outages that more than 476,000 people lost power. Strong winds tore down many of the houses in Florida. The citizens who were living near the ocean waters were strictly told to leave their homes by Governor Rick Scott in case of an emergency. In the text it states that forecasters say that the biggest danger is not the winds. Instead, it is the massive amount of seawater that could wash over the coastal areas. Two million people were told to move away from the coast to escape the storm. Hurricane Matthew has already left more than 280 people dead. According to the text, Barack Obama declared a state of an emergency for Florida. Hurricane Matthew struck Haiti on October 7, 2016. The dangerous storm hit land around the time the sun rose on Haiti’s southern coast. Many people live along that coast in shacks of wood or simple concrete blocks. This is important because those homes cannot withstand the force of winds that can reach 145 mph. Haitian officials tried to remove people from the most dangerous areas ahead of the storm. Many hesitated to leave their property. Some tried to find shelter only after the worst of the storm already started. Hurricane Matthew was expected to bring between one and two feet of rain, and up to forty inches of rain in certain places. This makes me wonder how long it takes for all the rain to dry up and fully dissolve off of the land. The storm moved along the Windward Passage between Haiti and Jamaica. Haiti’s civil protection agency reported one death. It was a fisherman who drowned in rough water churned up by the storm. In the article, it states that Matthew is in the region’s strongest hurricane since Felix in 2007. Haiti is a developing nation which means it is harder for the Haitians to recover from the hurricane versus how much quicker the citizens of California
