How can a country’s economic development affect the way people interact with their environment? The power of nature can be overwhelming whether you living in a developed or developing nation. Hurricanes are always devastating wherever you are and whenever the hurricane takes place. Recently, in late September into mid October, hurricane Matthew struck the world and left devastating affects to some nations around the world. Hurricane Matthew first hit the western part of Africa then came towards near the Caribbean and the land of Haiti. Hurricane Matthew hit Florida on October 7, 2016. It has been the first major hurricane for Florida in eleven years. This is important because the hurricane also changed the people of Florida because people in certain places were told to move aways to safer places that were in weaker categories. Still, some people decided to take their chances and hoped for the best. However, the hurricane will disrupt the citizens who leave because they will have to leave most of their belonging and their shelter. This is important because there are many negative affects whether you are leaving or staying. There was flooding of streets and many power outages that more than 476,000 people lost power. Strong winds tore down many of the houses in Florida. The citizens who were living near the ocean waters were strictly told to leave their homes by Governor Rick Scott in case of an emergency. In the text it states that forecasters say that the biggest danger is not the winds. Instead, it is the massive amount of seawater that could wash over the coastal areas. Two million people were told to move away from the coast to escape the storm. Hurricane Matthew has already left more than 280 people dead. Hurricane Matthew struck Haiti on October 7, 2016. The dangerous storm hit land around the time the sun rose on Haiti’s southern coast. Many people live along that coast in shacks of wood or simple concrete blocks. This is important because those homes cannot withstand the force of winds that can reach 145 mph. Haitian officials tried to remove people from the most dangerous areas ahead of the storm. Many hesitated to leave their property. Some tried to find shelter only after the worst of the storm already started. Hurricane Matthew was expected to bring between one and two feet of rain, and up to forty inches of rain in certain places. This makes me wonder how long it takes for all the rain to dry up and fully dissolve off of the land. The storm moved along the Windward Passage between Haiti and Jamaica. Haiti’s civil protection agency reported one death. It was a fisherman who drowned in rough water churned up by the storm. In the article, it states that Matthew is in the region’s strongest hurricane since Felix in 2007. The resulting floods inundated hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more than 30,000 people, and caused more than 17,000 deaths. Losses are estimated between 70 and 190 billion dollars.
Nearly 45 years ago one of the most powerful and damaging weather phenomenon’s ever to be recorded slammed into the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, a storm that effected people far and wide. Camille formed on August 14th just west of the Cayman Islands and rapidly intensified overnight becoming a category 3 hurricane approaching the island of Cuba. The storm trekked north-northwestward across the Gulf and became a stage 5 hurricane and maintained its strength before making landfall on the Mississippi Coast on the eve of August 17th. The devastating aftermath in the weeks to follow induced by the winds, surges, and rainfall took the lives of 256 people, and caused an estimated damage of 1.421 billion dollars.

On August 24th, 1992 in the state of Florida, complete destruction was the end result of Hurricane Andrew. A Hurricane that began in the Atlantic ocean at 20mph. That is almost twice the strength that normal hurricanes begin at. The peak strength of Hurricane Andrew was so strong that devices were not able to measure the winds. An approximation of the force of the winds was said to be up to 200mph. Andrew destroyed about 28,000 homes, damaged 100,000 homes and left 250,000 people homeless along with 30 billion dollars in damage and almost 30 deaths. Hurricane Andrew did not end its devastation in Florida, soon it went to Louisiana causing more damage. (Fig.1)
The Haitian government’s lack of preparedness for earthquakes despite the fact that earthquakes are common to the region is indicative of the governments inability and lack of resources to properly plan and protect it’s population against natural disasters. This lack of preparedness is not an isolated incident. Prior to the disaster, the World Bank and others were working with the Haitian government to incorporate disaster risk management into Haiti’s development strategy and to develop its capacity for disaster response. This capacity building was in its early stages of development when the earthquake hit, on January 12, 2010, and was mainly focused on hurricanes, which are the most common cause of natural disaster on the island (Margesson, 2010, p. 4).
It has brought with it new measures in structural development, social relationships and insurance holding. It is a major step towards the lessening of the impact of future disasters. With the winds and waters sweeping away, taking away people’s lives and property, the storm made it one of the costliest in the history of America. According to FEMA: The combination of surge and high waves were particularly destructive in areas along the Gulf of Mexico coast and parts of the Galveston Bay shoreline, particularly the Bolivar Peninsula, TX (where Gene lives).
Leading up to this storm, many prominent scientists believed that the hurricane would never make landfall, or if it did hit, would not cause any major damage. Due to this foolhardy belief held by the scientists, many civilians did not have any time to evacuate their homes and barely escaped with their loved ones and whatever small valuables or keepsakes they could grab. Regretfully, many families had to leave everything they had behind. Hurricane Andrew also damaged the livelihood of many small shop owners or farms and caused long term problems as well. Due to the large flooding and high wind speeds, much of southern Florida was left in ruin and many years were spent trying to clean the rubble and restore buildings. Hurricane Andrew also destroyed many precious ecosystems on top of all of that.
Hurricane Katrina was one of the most devastating natural disasters to happen in the United States. The storm resulted in more then US$100 billion in damage when the cities flood protection broke and 80% of the city was flooded (1). On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Gulf Coast of the United States. Forming over the Bahamas, Hurricane Katrina gradually strengthened as it moved closer and closer to the Gulf of Mexico. Recorded on August 28th, 2005, Katrina jumped from a category three storm to a category five storm with maximum sustained winds up to 160 miles per hour. Although other hurricanes, such as Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Wilma, exceeded Katrina, this dominant storm was classified as the fourth most intense hurricane based its pressure capacity. Once Hurricane Katrina hit land, it was pronounced as a category four storm moving slowly. There comes a time in the world where the outcome of certain events can cause a huge social change, one of those events is Hurricane Katrina. The events that took place prior to, during and after Katrina although impact only a few places physically it was left in the minds of everyone in the world. There were many actions that could have taken place to prevent the damage of such a catastrophic event, however nothing was done. Hurricane Katrina, a category 3 hurricane struck Louisiana and parts of the Mississippi. New Orleans in particular, due to various reasons received the most damage. Katrina first started off as a small hurricane formed in the Bahamas as it moved towards Louisiana and Mississippi it became a category 5, which is the strongest it can become, then decreased to category 3 once it finally struck. Hurricanes occur all over the world, at different times, but commonly through June first and late November. However in late August 2005 a catastrophic hurricane struck. This was Hurricane Katrina. With winds traveling over one hundred miles per hour making it a category five on the Saffir- Simpson Hurricane Scale it was said to have cause billions of dollars’ worth of damage. Hurricane Katrina flooded nearly forty thousand homes, and killed at least two thousand people (“Hurricane”). An average category five hurricane has enough energy to power street lamps for more than twenty seven thousand hours (Williams 58). Knowing about Hurricane Katrina, and the devastation of the city in New Orleans would be beneficial. Also, general information on hurricanes can help civilians and people of higher authority better understand and prepare for damage that could once hit their town and community. Because experts know the general information on these storms they can help explain to the public why and how Hurricane Katrina and other hurricanes occur. Hopefully, in the future civilians will know and use this information to their advantage against hurricanes.
