Wrestling began in ancient Olympic contests to evolve into the various forms of wrestling today, wrestling’s popularity has been expanding recently. Wrestling holds the title for one of the world's oldest sports; so that means that it has changed in many ways since then. There are cave drawings that have been found in France that are older than 15,000 years old.
As you can tell wrestling is really old and started as an Olympic sport. Wrestling has a really rich history full of historic events that helped form the sport that it has evolved into today. The first organized wrestling tournament was held in New York City, NY in 1888 Wrestling started in ancient Greece, and men would wrestle all the time to assert dominance and a plethora of more reasons. The first known match in Ancient Wrestling took place in approximately 708 B.C. Back in ancient times there were less rules, and only two official types of wrestling. One of the styles was fought by having the two opponents smolder themselves in olive oil, and then proceed to put some type of dust on themselves. They did this so it would help them acquire a better grasp while they fought in muddy pits. There were about three main rules. No punching, no gouging of the eyes, and no tripping.
