August Wilson’s Fences highlights the struggles of the African American male living in the 1950’s through its main character Troy Maxson. Racially and emotionally, Troy is unstable in his environment. Because of his past, he tries to not see his mistake repeated through his son and lives through his marriage with another woman. Throughout the play, the audience can see the hardships that evolved through the lives of African American males and their families.
