Schizophrenia can affect one's everyday life by the way they take care of themselves and relying on others more frequently. People with schizophrenia may find it difficult to keep an everyday job. It is easy for them to become distracted as they are dealing with the voice in their head that is accompanied by schizophrenia. The individual may also become paranoid and proceed to believe that they are being followed or spied on by something or someone. They will also spend a long time worrying about what others are thinking or doing to them. Another serious symptom of schizophrenia is the lack of interest and pleasure the person shows in everyday life. They may find it difficult to complete a certain task or follow through with plans or activities.

Client was previously a long term client of Ventura County Behavioral Health EPICS program with a diagnosis of 295.30 Schizophrenia, Paranoid Type.

According to the DSM-IV, schizophrenia is classified under the section of “Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders”. Schizophrenia is one of the most serious major chronic brain disorders in the field of mental health; it is a neurological disorder that affects the cognitive functions of the human brain. People living with this incapacitating illness can experience multiple symptoms that will cause extreme strain in their own and their families and friends life. The individual can lose reality, unable to work, have delusions and hallucinations, may have disorganized speech and thought processes, will withdraw from people and activities, they may become suspicious and paranoid, may behave inappropriately in every day social situations. They may neglect personal hygiene and dress improperly, use excessive make-up; every day life is becoming chaotic for everyone involved.
People today are not completely educated about schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that affects millions from country to country. In today’s up and coming world, men and women over the age of eighteen that suffer from schizophrenia, has developed to 1.1% (“Schizophrenia” 1). Schizophrenia, on average, begins between the ages of sixteen and thirty, and men normally accumulate the disease before women. With the mental disorder, “positive” and negative symptoms occur. “Positive” symptoms include: hallucinations, messy speech, delusions, and catatonic behavior. Negative symptoms include: loss of interest and drive, roller coaster emotions, the difficulty to extract obvious hints, and come across as being in a mood that is difficult to understand, such as depression (Frankenburg 1).
Families with a member suffering from any illness may be stressful enough but families with members diagnosed with schizophrenia are often faced with additional challenges such as the “external stressors of social stigma, isolation, and emotional frustration”. Many times, family conflicts arise as members attempt to provide care on an everyday basis (Chien, 2010, pg. xi). “A Beautiful Mind” is a brilliant motion picture directed by Ron Howard that chronicles the life of one John Nash, a prominent mathematician and the challenges he endures throughout his adult life afflicted with a chronic mental illness. “A Beautiful Mind” allows us to gain insight into the stressors that many families undergo when faced with living with a person with schizophrenia. This paper will explore the impact of schizophrenia on the lives of the Nash family as depicted in the aforementioned movie. Exploring the impact of the disease on the Nash family’s life will be followed with a discussion regarding an assessment conducted of the family, through the use of the Calgary Family Assessment model. Conducting the assessment allowed us to determine two nursing priorities, and nursing interventions in relation to them through the use of the Calgary intervention model. Essentially it becomes evident that the challenges faced by the Nash family are in the functional domain. The families inability to effectively communicate and problem solve becomes evident, which is negatively impacting the families ability to function effectively. There are many disorders throughout the world that affect people on a daily basis. They are life altering and life changing. They affect how a person can function on a normal level of life. This, in itself, is an interesting way of viewing the disorder, but it truly is the way that schizophrenia is viewed. The term normal is in its self a complex concept, but to understand that for the purpose of schizophrenia; normal is anything that deviates from the socially accepted way of conducting one’s self. The person affected by this disorder is drifting away from reality and, at the same time, drifting away from who they have been their whole life.
At some point a human might have a relative, or heard of someone, or even experienced itself of suffering from Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that affects many humans throughout the world. People living with this mental disorder may depend on a family member or someone close to take care of him/her. Certain individuals have a good chance of inheriting schizophrenia if a family member appears to show a history of this mental disorder. The vicious cycle of schizophrenia has a lot of parallels to normal people except for the actual biological diathesis and selective attention dysfunction. If a person is already pre disposed to the schizophrenia genes, then it can happen at any point in time, they could spiral down into a psychosis. The selective attention dysfunction is how the person cannot tune out, in a sense, surrounding things or apply different contexts to words that shouldn’t mean what they think. This is then escalated by having a difficult time reality testing and it is hard for people with schizophrenia to differentiate the difference between real and not real. There are various types of schizophrenia but one is especially associated with this dysfunction and that is hearing voices which are speculated to be their self-talking but they hear those as real voices and applies underlining meanings to them. The domino effect continues because the mind still recognizes the discomfort in the environment and the uneasiness so stress is then thrown into the mix. Stress then accelerates the selective attention dysfunction and the gears continue to go faster in the overall down fall of the functioning mind.

Schizophrenia can be cause by the intake of drugs while still a teen or young adult, as it can affect your brain to a greater degree during that time.an important note is that suicide is somewhat common among people with schizophrenia at a rate of 5-6 percent, and upwards of 20 percent of people with it attempt. Something common in Schizophrenic people is drug abuse, as a way to get away from all the troubles, but it may lead to more issues than before. (“Schizophrenia” Psychology Today) Most of the cognitive symptoms can leave to life being harder than it is, forgetting things more often, not being able to pay as close attention, and other things, paired with the other symptoms, mostly the positive ones, especially the hallucinations, if not dealt with, can prove a big threat to everyday life.

Schizophrenia is, at its core, the altering of a person’s perception of reality by some somatic means and when observed by a psychologically sound individual, can be quite unsettling. After all, seeing a person whose reality is fractured causes us to doubt our own reality, if only in a fleeting thought.
