Always in Shakespeare reading we learn many different themes. The play “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare is a classic published in 1603. The story goes through Hamlet’s everyday thoughts of life, love, people and other ideologies. Hamlet story teaches us throughout the story that he hates King Claudius with a ceaseless passion because he poisoned his brother in order to marry the queen and take the crown. Hamlet is the prince and his mother’s marriage to Claudius causes him to have a deep rooted hatred towards women which pushes him to hate sex. As a result, we see how deeply Hamlet values inner truth and his hatred for deceit. After learning Hamlet’s philosophy of life we see that he would not fit in modern American society. Firstly, this is not an uncommon statement, but holds truth to today’s society. Furthermore, people today have ulterior motives and hidden agendas behind their mask. Thus, this is a result of students paying for a class without participating; the students seem to have a hidden agenda and are being deceptive. This is shown by Hamlet from the first scene who is wearing “inky” black clothing and explaining his reasoning behind the clothing, “These indeed 'seem, For they are actions that a man might play: But I have that within which passes show; These but the trappings and the suits of woe”(1404) which shows Hamlet’s morals and hatred for deception by valuing inner truth above all. Furthermore, hamlet cannot explain his anguish and grief implying that Claudius with the rest of the court are disingenuous because they do not care about his feelings and are far too concerned with their appearance. Similarly, this plays a big part in America’s society today, everyone is far too concerned with keeping up appearances that they do not even bother to care to be genuine with themselves if it does not benefit them. This can be seen in Professor Watts English 2 classroom as the majority of the students walk in the classroom and stay quiet to keep up an appearance without opening up and engaging in the classroom. College kids nowadays are drinking more than ever in America and alcohol is being used as a recreational drug everywhere from clubs to parties’ even small gatherings. Modern times, even adults until their death keep drinking in America. So, this type of partying and drinking would drive Hamlet mad because when he came back to Denmark from the university, he was already saddened by Claudius’ arrival and his influence on the nation. Hamlet quotes this about the new king Claudius of Denmark "The king doth wake to-night and takes his rouse. Keeps wassail, and the swaggering up-spring reels; And as he drains his draughts of Rhenish down. The kettle-drum and trumpet thus bray out The triumph of his pledge."(1413-1414) This shows Hamlet is acknowledging Claudius’ partying in the festivities and drinking, which saddens Hamlet because he thinks that these parties and drinks are downgrading his own nation of Denmark. In Hamlet’s eyes, he would be ashamed of living in America and would not want to see such activities like partying and drinking for recreational reasons as it makes the whole nation look
