The epic poem Beowulf is filled with many themes. However the theme of good always triumphing over evil is the most important. The poem is also filled with many motifs such as Christian and pagan values. Both are represented in the epic and play a small role in the poem itself. The main character Beowulf is filled with pride and confidence but he also may have some arrogance and cockiness. His confidence and pride make him a great worrier and his arrogance and cockiness might be the reason why he is destroyed by the dragon. The themes in the epic of Beowulf are all valuable and help the story move along. Good triumphs over evil is the predominate theme and is the most valuable to the story. The whole idea of the poem is Beowulf representing the good, taking down monsters and dragons which represent evil. Beowulf starts out with an easy win over Grendel. Then he endures a much harder task in fighting Grendel's mother. In their battle is seems like Grendel's mother is going to win. But then the theme prevails and good takes down evil and Beowulf wins the fight. In his last battle Beowulf and Wiglaf conquer the dragon, but Beowulf is mortally wounded. He dies, and the feeling is evil won this battle, but everyone dies. The author is trying to portray that to us in a way that lets us know death is not evil. Christian and pagan values is one we can identify with pretty easily. Christian values pop up several times. The Geats pray when their boat lands safely in Denmark. The narrator also speaks of God as the almighty who shaped the earth. Pagans values are seen when they sacrificed to the old stone Gods. The values of these two groups of people were not added just for nothing. The author added them for us two both sides function and that it's okay to believe in one or the other. As long as we remain peaceful and compassionate, it won't harm us to have other religions or none religious people in our
