The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien is a novel that shows a journey with a hobbit, Bilbo, and dwarves that try reclaim their kingdom that a dragon took from then a long. Over the journey, Bilbo changed from soft and timid to be a charter of wisdom and courage. Bilbo has developed through the story because of key events and these key events.
One of the first key experiences was when Bilbo got trapped in a cave. Bilbo fell into a cave when goblins ambushed the group while they were settling in a cave. The dwarves and Bilbo got separated so, Bilbo had to get back with them. In the cave, Bilbo meets a creature named Gollum who plays a game with him. In the game if Bilbo finds defeat the creature gets to eat him but, if he wins then the creature has to show the way out. While in the cave he found a ring that makes him invisible, which happened to be the Gollum's birthday present. In The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, it says “ Gollum was cursing and wailing away in the gloom, not very far off by the sound of it. The dwarves got captured by the wood-elves, but Bilbo didn’t because he wore his ring which made him invisible. Bilbo had to rescue the dwarves who were in the captivity of the elves. When Bilbo was searching for a way to help the dwarves escape, Bilbo found barrels which were getting shipped to a place called Lake-town. He made up a plan that he could hide the dwarves and himself inside the barrels so that they can escape. This event changed Bilbo because he gained more courage and wisdom. The dwarves were on a quest to find and reclaim their famous treasure from the great dragon Smaug. It would be a long and difficult journey, and they felt it would be made simpler with the help of a burglar. This was what Bilbo was for, even if he didn’t know it. Bilbo didn’t want to be on the adventure, let alone play a vital role in it. But by the time the story concluded, Bilbo had changed from a well-to-do homebody into a burglar.

This story begins with a small fellow by the name of Bilbo Baggins. This fantasy story was written in 1956 by J.R.R. Tolkien. It is about a hero’s journey through the dangers and wonders of Middle Earth. Although it was not meant to become such a well-known book, it is filled with much literature. Throughout the book, Tolkien uses literary devices such as repetition, similes, and metaphors to develop the theme of cunning and cleverness.
Then one day a wizard by the name of Gandalf comes and gives Bilbo the opportunity to go on an adventure. Bilbo turns his offer down, but the next day thirteen dwarves come to his house. They have meals together and they sleep at Bilbo’s house. Gandalf then convinces him to go on an adventure with them. Bilbo is many things, in the beginning he is flat, static, main, and he is the protagonist.
During the middle of Bilbo and his crew's adventure they run into big trouble with the giant spiders. While asleep in the dark of the forrest Bilbo and the dwarves are surprised to find themselves tied up by the spiders. Using his sword later named Sting, Bilbo cuts himself free. He leads the spiders away from the dwarves by throwing stones in the opposite direction, then he sets the dwarves free with help from the invisibility ring so the spiders could not see him. Bilbo throws himself in harm all to guarantee the dwarves their protection. Another time Bilbo offered up his safety in order to ensure the dwarves was when he rescued all of them from the wood elves. As Bilbo and the dwarves were on a mission to find food somewhere, they run into the wood-elves. Bilbo put his ring on so he was invisibly but all the dwarves were locked up in the Elvenking's castle. After several weeks of exploring the castle, Bilbo comes up with his plan of escape. Bilbo steals the keys from the guard while he was not paying attention, then manages to set all the dwarves free. They are now all floating downstream in empty wine barrels. If it was not for Bilbo's yield, they would still be prisoners in there. It was risky business and Bilbo could be caught and locked up as well, but he did it and his plan was completed with a favorable
Finally, as the novel is coming to an end, it is apparent how much Bilbo Baggins has changed throughout The Hobbit. In the introduction of the book, Tolkien displays Bilbo as a fearful creature afraid to follow his Took roots. As the book continues, Bilbo sees things that change him and make him a stronger hobbit than the old Bilbo. By the end of the book, Mr. Baggins finally gained his well earned respect and found out that being an adventurer is not an awful thing to be. So, it seems as if the theme of change in The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien was shown through Bilbo’s character.
Bilbo cleverly eluded Smaug’s temptation, spared the life of foul creature Gollum, and demonstrate courage more and more throughout his journey. J.R.R Tolkien's action packed, fantasy driven, inspiring novel The Hobbit shows the message that everyone must know, that you should never give up even if all hope seems to be lost. It shows setting of evergreen forests with villages scattered along the paths of which they must take and mountains just on the horizon. The read must go along with bilbo baggins a hobbit that does not realize there is more to him than just being a baggins and that he will live up to his family's name. Even after gandalf tells him that he will embark on a great adventure he still doesn’t believe he is anymore than just bilbo. Therefor this story is inspiring and shows that with the setting, character, and theme combined make this story a great read.
The first phase of initiation is the Road of Trials, represented when Gandalf, Bilbo’s supernatural aid, saves Bilbo from a a danger, “Of course it was Gandalf… It burned with a rage that made it gleam if goblins were about; now it was bright as blue flame for delight in the killing of the great lord of the cave” (Tolkien 65). Bilbo realizes when the Goblin attack ends, that adventure can be difficult when Gandalf saves the group from the goblins. The next stage is the Meeting with the Goddess, since Bilbo never actually encounters a mythical goddess in The Hobbit, this ‘goddess’ is represented through the ring, “his hand met what felt like a tiny ring of cold metal lying on the floor of the tunnel. It was a turning point in his career, but he did not know it” (Tolkien 68). In the third phase of Initiation, Woman as Temptress, Someone or something tries to distract the hero from his goal; in The Hobbit, this temptress is represented by the ring; however, it does not affect Bilbo negatively. At the beginning of the novel, Mr. Baggins starts out at his comfy little hobbit home, but suddenly a grand, wise wizard shows up. Not long after, 12 dwarves began to appear, one by one at Bilbo’s door, and they have come to carry him off on a life-changing adventure, full of greed. That was the beginning of our hairy hobbit’s transformation from a shy, quiet hobbit, to a strong and bold life-saving hero, who enchants any who come in contact with him. For example of his strength and boldness, would be in chapter 5, when Bilbo rhymes riddles for an unknown creature, who calls itself Gollum. Bilbo would’ve been eaten if he were to have lost, but took his chances, and risked it anyway. After all, it did get him out of that goblin-infested cave.
