How Does Bilbo Change In The Hobbit

The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien is a novel that shows a journey with a hobbit, Bilbo, and dwarves that try reclaim their kingdom that a dragon took from then a long. Over the journey, Bilbo changed from soft and timid to be a charter of wisdom and courage. Bilbo has developed through the story because of key events and these key events.

One of the first key experiences was when Bilbo got trapped in a cave. Bilbo fell into a cave when goblins ambushed the group while they were settling in a cave. The dwarves and Bilbo got separated so, Bilbo had to get back with them. In the cave, Bilbo meets a creature named Gollum who plays a game with him. In the game if Bilbo finds defeat the creature gets to eat him but, if he wins then the creature has to show the way out. While in the cave he found a ring that makes him invisible, which happened to be the Gollum's birthday present. In The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, it says “ Gollum was cursing and wailing away in the gloom, not very far off by the sound of it. He was on his island, scrabbling here and there, searching and seeking in vain.” (page 82) This shows that Gollum was mad at the fact that he lost his ring. The dwarves got captured by the wood-elves, but Bilbo didn’t because he wore his ring which made him invisible. Bilbo had to rescue the dwarves who were in the captivity of the elves. When Bilbo was searching for a way to help the dwarves escape, Bilbo found barrels which were getting shipped to a place called Lake-town. He made up a plan that he could hide the dwarves and himself inside the barrels so that they can escape. This event changed Bilbo because he gained more courage and wisdom. He gets more wisdom because he had to come up with the plan by himself without any of the elves helping him.
