In the heart of Alabama, it's rare to find a white man willing and proud to defend a colored man to the best to his ability, especially a man conscious of the social repercussions of doing so. Yet in our home of Maycomb a man fitting these characteristics reside and I have never had more respect for a man than I have for Mr. Atticus Finch. The case of Tom Robinson was a losing one from the second Mayella Ewell began crying in the courtroom, however, Atticus never stopped fighting for Tom and for that I admire him. This week Mr. Tom Robinson was fatally shot seventeen times by guards at the Enfield Prison Farm, where he was waiting to be executed.     Atticus Finch is a character of stability in an unstable society.  He is a balanced figure who is able to cope with the unreasonable and highly emotional town in which he lives.  He can manage the prejudiced white masses and still deal justly with the underprivileged Negro population of Maycomb.  He is one of the few people who understand the individual worth of a person regardless of the color of his/her skin.  This enables him to defend Tom Robinson based solely on the concept of justice and equality.  In his closing argument, Atticus explains that, “there is one place all men are created equal.  That place is in a court room” (Lee 205).  This justifies the fact that Atticus believes in equality in a society, the equality not only of race, but also of sex, class, and religion as well.  His view of equality and justice is a symbol of his own psychological stability throughout the novel.  Accordingly, in the final analysis of the story, Atticus represents the “justice” in the community of Maycomb.  His stability throughout the book is one of the many characteristics that depict Atticus Finch as the novel’s core.

Although he lives in Alabama, surrounded by racists, Atticus shows extreme bravery in the way he defends Tom Robinson. Not only does Atticus defend Tom Robinson’s case in the courtroom, he also pours his heart and soul into protecting Robinson and his whole family from the angry mobs of Maycomb. When Atticus explains to Scout and Jem, “I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again,” he models bravery and the importance of doing the right thing even under the most difficult circumstances (Lee 75).
