On October 29, 1929, began what is now known as, "The Great Depression." The Great Depression was when the American- stock market crashed, causing the most severe economic downturn for the United States. Speculators lost their shirts; banks failed; the nation’s money supply diminished; and companies went bankrupt and began to fire their workers in groups. In the beginning of 1933, one of our best presidents got elected, Franklin D. Roosevelt, he acted swiftly to try and stabilize the economy and provide jobs and relief to those who were suffering. Over the next eight years, the government instituted a series of experimental projects and programs, known collectively as the New Deal, that aimed to restore some measure of dignity and prosperity to many Americans (history.com). More than that, Roosevelt’s New Deal permanently changed the federal government’s relationship to the U.S. populace (history.com). He promised that he would act swiftly to face the dark realities of the moment(history.com). The next day, the new president declared a four-day bank holiday to stop people from withdrawing their money from shaky banks(history.com).

After nearly a decade of optimism and prosperity, the United States took a turn for the worse on October 29, 1929, the day the stock market crashed, better known as Black Tuesday and the official beginning of the Great Depression. The downfall of the economy during the presidency of Herbert Hoover led to much comparison when his successor, Franklin D. Roosevelt, took office. Although both presidents had their share of negative feedback, it is evident that Hoover’s inaction towards the crisis and Roosevelt’s later eccentric methods to simulate the economy would place FDR in the positive limelight of fixing the nation in one of its worst times. Herbert Hoover was sworn into office when the economic status of the country stood at its highest and the nation was accustomed to a prosperous way of living. In the Roaring Twenties, people started buying household materials and stocks that they could not pay for in credit. Farmers, textile workers, and miners all got low wages. Known for its vast amount of unemployment, destitution, and starvation. With Hoovervilles planting roots all over from Virginia to California during a nationwide devastation, the government decided to intervene. Although there were many solutions to this major problem, the one that affected it the most were the labor reforms. Work relief programs such as the New Deal, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Federal Housing Administration, the National Labor Relations Act, and the Fair Labor Standards Act helped America recover from its darkest hour.

People continue to argue whether the New Deal is radical or conservative today using many programs and outcomes as their support. Today, historians view the New Deal as more conservative, completely opposite of what conservatives felt at the time. With programs challenging economic, social, and political standards, the New Deal imposed both radical and conservative ideals into the American society causing Franklin D. Roosevelt to leave his lasting stamp and legacy on all presidents and generations to come.

The Great Depression lasted from 1929 to the United States entry into World War II in 1941. The cause of the Depression was the panicked rush to get money out of the banks when the market crashed. After the depression America was in a state mass hysteria as the Wall Street crash had caused a massive crisis among the American public because the impact of the wall street crash caused 12 million people out of work, it also caused 20,000 companies to go bankrupt and there were 23,000 suicides in one year because of the wall street crash this was the highest amount of suicides in a year ever. Throughout this decade of the twentieth century, consumer spending had increased significantly, as well as the innovation of new technologies, including automotive, chemical, movie, and radio industries. However, lasting only from 1920-1929, this economic opulence was not destined to proceed. On October 29, 1929, Black Tuesday struck Wall Street, resulting in one of the most catastrophic crashes in the history of Wall Street. On that day, over 16 million shares of stock were traded, resulting in the loss of billions of dollars. In addition to the prices of American stock plummeting, unemployment skyrocketed to approximately 15 million people as a result of bank failures: America had been hit by what came to be known as the Great Depression. To combat this, President Franklin D. Roosevelt formulated an array of New Deal programs to promote the balance of money and banking, job creation, and social security. Hoover on the other hand; allowed the U.S. to slide right into the depression, giving Americans the power to blame him. The Depression was unlike anything that had been seen before. It was more prolonged and influential than any economic downturn in the history of the United States. The Depression struck fear in the government and the American people because it was so different. Calvin Coolidge even said, "In other periods of depression, it has always been possible to see some things which were solid and upon which you could base hope, but as I look about, I now see nothing to give ground to hope—nothing of man." People were scared and did not know what to do to address the looming economic crash. As a result of the Depression’s seriousness and severity, it took unconventional methods to fix the economy and get it going again. Franklin D. Roosevelt and his administration had to think outside the box to fix the economy. The administration changed the role of the government in the lives of the people, the economy, and the world. As a result of the abnormal nature of the Depression, the FDR administration had to experiment with different programs and approaches to the issue, as stated by William Lloyd Garrison when he describes the new deal as both assisting and slowing the recovery.
