The History of Braille

When Braille was invented, it changed the lives of the blind all over the world. Before Braille, there was almost no way for blind people to be able to read by themselves. Braille’s history and how it came to be is quite the story. It all started with one boy, who wasn’t afraid to conquer hardships, and who wanted to change the world, for blind people. His name was Louis Braille.

Before we talk about the history of Braille, you need to know what Braille is exactly. Braille is a series of multiple raised dots. When put together in certain ways, the dots can be used to read with the fingers, not the eyes. It is not a language, but simply a code used to read and write languages. He was born in 1809. Contrary to common belief Louis Braille wasn’t actually born blind. It was an accident that caused him to go blind. At the age of 3, He snuck into his father’s workshop. He started playing with an awl, which is a sharp tool, and accidentally poked his eye. Louis’ eye had gotten infected. Eventually the other eye did as well, which caused him to go blind. Louis Braille’s life was never the same after that incident.

Louis Braille was could no longer see, but he continued to do most of things he did before. He was intelligent, and creative. As Louis grew older, the small school in Paris that he went to did not have the resources to teach Louis. He learned about a school for the blind in another area of Paris. Louis immediately decided that he wanted to go and move to the school.

When Louis got to the school, he found out that they had books for the blind. The books had raised letters, but the letters were very big and bulky, so the books were as well.
