How Did Jack London Change Throughout The Story

In the 1902 version of “ To Build a Fire”; Jack London portrays Tom Vincent as an independent man who doesn’t seem to listen to other peoples advice. He travels through the Klondike with no one by his side. A couple years later London had an idea to make a new and improved version of his short story “ To Build a Fire”. He changed some things and made a somewhat new story line. There are many similarities and differences in the two short stories and there is probably a good reason why he made these certain changes. London had made a daring character in his first short story. That was evident, being that one of the first sentences of the story was “ Never travel alone, a precept of the North, he heard many times, but just laughed.” The reason why Jack had changed this characteristic in the second version could be because he had too much confidence. In the 1906 story the main character was very naive. He did not think much about how he should try to survive after finding out he probably wouldn’t be to the camp with the boys any time soon. London kept that in there to make sure the reader knows the struggles he is having. The main character is not able to make a fully functioning fire the first few times he tries it. He can eventually make a small one but it gets taken out for different reasons. I think the reason why Jack put that aspect in there is to reassure that the man has little to know idea about what he is doing. In both stories he kept that outlook of the man. Showing signs that he probably won’t get out of this alive. It is just another way of showing how desperate the man really is to be warm. Like when he says “ I am not with myself anymore” that shows that he is on the edge of death and he has no way out of
