Abbie Hoffman was born on November 30, 1936, in Worcester, Massachusetts He was the oldest of three children of John Hoffman and Florence Schanberg. Hoffman was an outstanding student but he consistently received failing grades for conduct. After high school he became a politicized in college. In 1960 Hoffman became involved in the growing of the civil rights movement, working for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored people. Then Hoffman participates in the freedom of summer, Organized by the SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee). In 1967 Hoffman joined the growing opposition movement to the Vietnam War. He became together with the hippies, attempting to direct their energy into an act for social change. He wanted to pursuit his dream, wanting everyone to have their equal rights. Hoffman would do everything he can to help everyone out. Most importantly he wanted equality. Throughout the years he worked as a traveling salesman selling medical supplies. That job provided a car which helped him to travel to different civil rights demonstrations. On October 21, 1967, Hoffman joined the opposition movement to the Vietnam War. Hoffman was able to convinced about 75,000 people to gathered in Washington D.C to protest against the vietnam war and people’s equality. Hoffman wanted to demonstrate being a big united group they were going to be able to make changes for everyone and for the better. Attempting to direct the message of creative energy and hope into a movement for social change. Hoffman knew what it was going to take to protest against something like the Vietnam War. he was going to need people who believed and who were willing to take
