Slavery has been going on for thousands of years now but, the slave trade started when Portuguese were exploring the world looking for spices but ended up getting Africans as captives and took them to Prince Henry the Navigator as a gift. The eight captives were not brutally hurt they were taken into society but as the years past the slave trade grew so much that the Portuguese built a fort in Africa. They started imprisoning Africans and taking them to Europe and the American colonies so they can now be used as slaves. The slaves were captured out of nowhere one slave said that they were playing the field and they were just kidnapped and taken to the ports where they would be held captives. They would put weights around their necks and chains on their ankles and wrist to hold them down and they wouldn’t be able to run away. When the ships came they were taken aboard and put on the lower deck. During the voyage a lot of the slaves became sick, mostly having smallpox, and would spread their sickness to the other slaves which caused a lot of slaves to not survive the voyage. Some ships would try to keep the slave deck clean so they can prevent widespread illness. A story of a slave in during the slave ship was told to stretch out his limbs for examination the man refused and ended up getting whipped. The slaves in some ships were told to dance around and in some ships this would have to be done naked, the people on the ships said it was so they slaves can have exercise but in reality it was for their own entertainment and if they refused or wouldn’t please the slavers the slaves would be whipped. When they got to land the slaves would be auctioned off to what they would call them masters.
