Beautiful Colonial Williamsburg has many roots within the history of Virginia. From colonial times to present day, Williamsburg has kept the charm of a time long ago. Colonial Williamsburg through the centuries has given people a place to learn about the rich history Virginia has to offer. The significance of Colonial Williamsburg can be found within the battles that were fought during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, the political figures that helped shape this great nation, and restoration efforts within the city of Williamsburg to maintain a time that should never be forgotten.
When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.
The cause of the Wave Hill Walk-Off had started almost one-hundred years before the protest began. Prior to 1883, the Gurindji people had owned their land for tens of thousands of years and then suddenly, the Colonial Government grants almost 3,000 square kilometers of Gurindji land to explorer and pastoralist Nathaniel Buchanan (Morelli, 2016). The next step of the cause was the Vestey brothers buying the cattle station in the Northern Territory in 1914. As a cruel money-making tactic, the brothers put the Gurindji people to work with a very poor pay rate and terrible work conditions. Between 1914 and 1966 many other events attributed to the cause of the walk-off such as; a report that exposed the working conditions of the Gurindji, the North-Australian
This arts study will define the importance of Elfreths Alley as one of Philadelphia’s oldest urban areas and the evolution of preserving the site as a National Historic Landmark. In the early 1700s, Elfreths Alley was a subdivision project that sought to house various members of shipping community near the docking areas of Philadelphia. Throughout the 19th century, Elfreths Alley became a center for industrialization that housed many differing immigrant communities, and especially, the Irish. The housing structure of Elfreths Alley are primarily that of a Georgina colonial style, which were preserved over the centuries until the formation of the Eflreth Alley Association
On October 22 at 7:30pm in Williams Hall, I watched a film by Marta Cunningham called “Valenetine Road”. The film was about a murder that occurred on February 12, 2008 in Oxnard, California, were either-grader Brandon Mclnerney shot an openly gay classmate Larry King. Although what seemed like an open and shut case, the trial took over three years before the judge and jury was able to deliberate a decision. Coupled with the abnormality of a juvenile murderer and extenuating trail time, the case garnered countless media appearances that choose to depict the case one sided. However, through the film, the background information proved to be vital because the film choose to present both sides of the story persuasively and effectively. This allows
The four films in theme four are all different types of movies, however, they all somehow presented one same theme: over-consumption, and the main message that all those four films tried to deliver is that because human-beings over-consumed the limited resources just in order to live more comfortably, they produced a large amount of trash on earth and then drop them carelessly. If we continued doing that and make no attempt to correct their own mistakes, we will eventually destroy our homeland and pay for that. The over-consumption and be reflected in different forms, for example, in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, people in town buy similar gifts over and over again, and then abandoned them on the mountain when they were still useful; in Wall-E, the earth was out of resources and green plants, and it was already covered by trash; and in The Lorax, people cutting down all the trees just in order to produce a material called Thneeds. The environment in these movies were already being destroyed, usually the planet is
Presidio Park, once known as Presidio Hill is one of California's historical landmarks that is situated in the heart of early San Diego, Old Town. Locals and tourists come every year to this buried ruin of early San Diego, to experience and learn about California history. It was once inhabited over one thousand years ago by the indigenous Tipai-Kumeyaay. It was later then seized and taken over by Spanish colonizers in the late 1760’s when they established the first fort, residences, and a mission church on Presidio Hill. Truth be told, many locals or tourists do not know the significance of many historical landmarks in California. As previously stated, the first fort, residences, and small church established during Spanish colonization in Presidio Park were the first European settlement in Alta California.
Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas directed by Ron Howard, came out on November 8, 2000. This children’s literature Christmas movie happens to tell a valuable story. Although, it may seem a little intmidating for children, it all goes into the wonderful meaning of this film. The original How the Grinch Stole Christmas came out in 1966. Ron Howard did his best to make a magical remake. I recommend that all families watch this movie during the holiday season to remind themselves of the true meaning of Christmas.
Bruce Beresford’s film, Paradise Road, is based on the true historical events that followed the attack of the Vyner Brooke, where the hardships of the circumstances tested the characters in ways that both support and challenge the statement of ‘who we are is truly tested and proven when we encounter conflict’. Conflict is defined as “a serious disagreement or argument, typically a protracted one”, and can be perceived in many ways. How someone perceives conflict is beyond their control, as it may be entirely influenced by others and their actions, their perception
All haikus must follow through a certain criteria. This procedure of writing is what makes haikus distinguishable from other types of poetry. Poems must attain a 5,7,5 syllable scheme in order to be recognized as a haiku. Similar to haikus, books must also undertake a list of steps to be considered as a hero’s journey. A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, does not see this through.
In "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge undergoes a transformation as a result of his encounters with three ghosts and becomes a kind, happy, and generous man. His greedy, cruel, and grumpy demeanor is replaced seemingly overnight, but he doesn’t just wake up and decide to be nice. It takes three Spirits to change his outlook on life - The Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future. The Ghost of Christmas Past makes Scrooge begin to regret his selfishness, and the Ghost of Christmas Present begins to teach him about others. This second Ghost helps to make him realize that money doesn't buy happiness. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, however, teaches the most profound lesson of all: unless he changes, no one will care if Scrooge dies. Because of the Ghosts, by Christmas morning Ebenezer Scrooge is a completely different person from the man who went to bed on Christmas Eve.
Passover, one of the most highly celebrated Jewish holidays of the year, is more than merely just a holiday; it is a celebration of emancipation of the Jews in ancient Egypt from slavery to freedom. The name “Passover” comes from the Hebrew word Pesach which is based on the root ‘pass over’. Accompanying stories of the Exodus, this sacred time is a chance for Jews to reflect on values of community, responsibility, truth, compassion, faith, and the value of their religion. In essence, Passover is an eight-day celebration in the early spring, typically in the month of April, between the 15th to the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan in which the Jews remember and celebrate their release from Egypt.
Truman Capote’s story A Christmas Memory, is about Capote’s childhood memory of a particular holiday season and how he enjoyed that moment in time with a special friend. Capote is illustrated by the main character, Buddy. Buddy and his distant cousin have a bonding friendship and tell of their exploits during that Christmas. They pick out a very special Christmas tree, make each other presents, and make fruitcakes.
From the friendships they can make that will last a lifetime, to the distinct memories they have of campfire traditions, camp is laced with immeasurable meaning. The skills that children learn and practice at camp can become a part of their identity, and may even grow into passions that they will continue to pursue as an adult. Whether they want it or not, the songs with constantly haunt them throughout the years and though they claim to hate it, they secretly enjoy the reminder of summer fun and adventure. One thing camp taught me that I find of value today, is to say “yes!” to adventures and working with my team to accomplish outrageously fun challenges and
Holidays are a celebration and an enjoyment of festivities. Although they are a commonality across the world, holidays differ between countries and cultures. But, what many do not realize is that holidays are ultimately ideology driven, that is that the group that celebrates these holidays follows a certain set of ideas and beliefs. Whether the ideology is religion based, or politically based, all holidays are centered around ideologies.
