Could you get by living alone in New York City? Holden Caulfield is a student who attends and gets kick out of many private schools. Around Christmas time, Holden gets the ax from Pencey Prep School and is forced to live in the Big Apple for a few days so his parents will not notice he has been expelled again. This paper will summarize what happens along Holden Caulfield’s adventures through the City that Never Sleeps. I will evaluate the reason he flunks out of school, summarize his adventures in the first night and day, and evaluate his actions and writing style.
Holden does not try at all in school. Holden also said he was flunking four out of his five classes. The only reason he was passing English is because he is learning the same concepts as the ones he learned at the last school he flunked out of. The same night he talked to Mr. Spencer, he also got into a fight over a girl with his roommate, Stradlater. After this fight, Holden packed up his most valuable belongings and headed into the city.
Holden had quite an eventful first night. He went to a bar that had an opulent man who plays piano very well. After a few drinks he decided to go to his hotel. Everything is written in verbatim to what actually happened. He writes his story exactly like he would say it out loud. He swears, acts like he doesn’t care, and gives his opinion on everything.
