In this essay I will be focusing on how Hip-hop degrades all women. Hip-hop music also known as rap music started in the 1970s. The way women are put down through rap lyrics and music videos just destroys the confidence of women in their everyday lives, giving these male rappers the assumption that it is perfectly okay for women to be treated in a terrible way, and causing them to believe they are nothing more than just an object. Then the questions start to come to mind like why don’t women take a stand? Women have encouraged and allowed these rappers/men to degrade them for quite some time now but I think it is time for them to take a stand once in for all. It has been over three decades that all this madness has been going on. We are in the year 2016 and these rappers still disrespect women like there is no tomorrow. Every hip-hop song talks about sex, drugs and money like it always has. In almost every music video that comes out they have half-naked women and other men see that and think these rappers are living the good life. For instance the music video “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thick and Pharrell Williams they dance and touch these naked models. (Makarechi) The majority of people would say that there is no sexism in the culture of Hip-Hop. Artists and listeners would more than likely agree that women want to be called and treated like an object. Women on the other hand, feel that they need to fit the description of becoming a video vixen. As mentioned before these women are in these videos dancing to these negative lyrics because they believe these rappers aren’t talking about them.
