The Improvement of Helmets
Is helmet improvement, substantial for the use of football player’s? When playing the game of football, safety is the most important element of the game. Although the improvement of helmets will benefit players, they can still increase the risk of obtaining a concussion. According to the website, “Heading off Trouble: Concussions can be More Than Just a Headache it says, ”You may feel dizzy, or confused, and you may have headaches or an upset stomach, but those noticeable symptoms should go away within two weeks...They may also perform a CT (computed tomography) scan, which is like an X-ray of the brain, to assess the damage. There is no medicine or medical treatment to are a concussion--rest is the only remedy.” …show more content…

Although some coaches and helmet manufacturers might disagree, helmets should improve because it will benefit player’s health by decreasing the number of concussions as well as other injuries, and reducing the risk of social effects after the strong impact to the head.
By improving helmets, it helps the player’s succeed more in the game because they no longer have to worry about the risk of a concussion. According to the website, “Making Football Helmets Safer to Prevent Concussions” by Mike Fricano, “Major impact-absorbing element of the helmet is a foamed polymer liner, commonly made of expanded polystyrene. They absorb energy which is omnidirectional.” This shows that the protective foam inside the helmet is involving all directions to protect all sides of the head. UCLA professor, Vijay Gupta creates a polymer that can make less of hard helmet hits on the field. Though, with the improvement of helmets or moving back to an older version of the helmet can reduce the risk of concussions. First, according to the NCAA.org, “Responses to injury typically produce a sense of loss, (loss of control, loss of skills) fear, and anxiety/worry.” This shows that with the strong impact to the head social occur and produce the loss of different social skills and mental skills. As a cause to this, player’s are using their helmets as weapons because they know they do not have to be as cautious. However, this causes them to get hurt even more. Also, concussions cause deficits with speaking and learning skills. This evidence supports the claim because it shows that players are using their helmet as a weapon. Though, this is causing them to get more hurt. However, by improving helmets, players will not get hurt and deal with the social effects after a concussion. On the other hand, “If you want to prevent concussions take the helmet off.” According to Hines Ward: “If you Want to Prevent Concussions, Take the Helmet off,” Hines Ward a former football star says, “Play old-school football with leather helmets, no facemask. When you put a helmet on you’re going to use it as a weapon, just like you use shoulder pads as a weapon.” However, Ward concluded that they should just eliminate helmets and return to leather helmets because than players will feel more cautious.
