“The Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck, tells a story about a family in American history during the great depression in the late 1920’s. The Grapes of Wrath reflected the hardship during the period of American history how a family and people alike endure sorrow, famishment, and repositioning. John Steinbeck put in the small details in describing the characters how they responded to each other in desperate situation. I believe that John Steinbeck’s intention in writing the Grapes of Wrath is to show the reader what a difficult and dark time the great depression was in American history, and how one family was able to endure relocation, suffering and starvation in spite the odds against them during their travels.

Tom makes his way back and travels to his family home, in which finding out on his way back to his family home, how people treat one another. Even when Tom comes up to a truck driver looking for a free ride, John makes a very interesting statement in this part of the book in showing how people are treated and how people show signs of helping out. In his book states when Tom comes up to a truck driver looking for a free ride down the road, “No Riders sticker on the windshield.” (Grapes of Wrath p. 5) Showing how companies do not even want truck drivers employee in helping out or they could lose their jobs or be fired. “Sure—I seen it. But sometimes a guy will be a good guy even if some rich bastard makes him carry a sticker." (Grapes of Wrath, p. 6) in this segment of the story show how sometimes, doing a little wrong could also be a good thing. Even if in the decision making of the truck driver showing how he still wants to do the right thing, but also becoming that good guy without getting into trouble. “The driver, getting slowly into the truck, considered the parts of this answer. If he refused now, not only was he not a good person, but he was forced to carry a sticker, was not allowed to have company. “Why don't you go on west to California? There is work there, and it never gets cold. Why, you can reach out anywhere and pick an orange. Why, there's always some kind of crop to work in.” (Grapes of Wrath p.23) Even the banker men offer up some good advice in trying to help the Joad family out in going to California for finding work and starting a new life. They also, make it sound like California had plenty of food sources as if you could just reach out and pick fruit right off the trees in
