The author of “Tortilla Flat”, and many other novels, is John Steinbeck. John Steinbeck, an American author, was born on February 27,1902 and died December 20, 1968. He was raised in a humble family with three sisters. At the age of fourteen, Steinbeck started locking himself in his room to write; it was at this age that he became a writer. At the age of seventeen he enrolled at Stanford University, not as a personal interest but more to please his parents. After six years of being in and out of school, Steinbeck dropped out as he saw no use for college. Steinbeck decided to be a freelance writer after his Stanford experience. For a short period of time he moved to New York City, but then scurried back to California. In 1929, as a caretaker in Lake Tahoe, he wrote his first novel Cup of Gold. In Steinbeck's novel, Grapes of Wrath, setting is a predominant component of the story. Throughout the novel Steinbeck takes initiative to describe the surroundings and what is going on. The third chapter is purely dedicated to a turtle in the summer heat trying to cross the highway. Steinbeck took to great detail the nature, “The concrete highway was edged with a mat of tangled, broken, dry grass, and the grass heads were heavy with oat beards to catch on a dog’s coat, and foxtails to tangle in a horse's fetlocks , and clover burrs to fasten in sheeps wool…”(Steinbeck,14) When first developing the setting, Steinbeck used immense description, “During the night the wind raced faster over the land, dug cunningly among the rootlets of the corn, and the corn fought the wind with its weakened leaves until the roots were freed by the prying wind and then each stalk settled wearily sideways toward the earth and pointed the direction of the wind.” (Steinbeck, 2) Steinbeck pays great attention to the reality that setting is what grabs the readers regard for the
