By viewing the history of graffiti, the way it is represented in modern culture, the effect it has on society we can make a strong argument to group graffiti as an art form and why it should notshouldn’t be illegal. Graffiti is a form of art that is misrepresented in modern society and shouldn’t be considered illegal. In order to determine if graffiti is art we have to look at itsit’s history., Today, graffiti today has a bad rap due to its usage in “tagging” (Ross) locations by gangs. Graffiti dates back to around the Seventh century, it was first sighted in a port-town in England known as “Cley-Next-the-Sea” (Ravilious), it was an extremely popular town with a devout religious community. Many people view it as an act of deviance because it is vandalism of property. However, in modern culture graffiti is used in movies “as a backdrop to tell a story” (Ross), this is typically more street art but that is a form of graffiti. There is of course other view points to this, movies also use graffiti to “portray criminals and criminal activities” (Ross) which is completely misrepresenting the art form. Now, there’s no denying the fact that graffiti is used to portray deviant messages and groups, this form of graffiti is obviously vandalism and is unwanted, the major type of graffiti that is good is mainly known as street art. Can you imagine a city that isthat’s completely graffiti free? That sounds quite boring, graffiti is what gives a city its character and feel, it usually gets a bad wrap because of it’s use in movies being portrayed as a gang related activity, although it is more than
Webster defines graffiti as an inscription or drawing made on some public surface. Graffiti is often thought of as gang-related, because gangs have traditionally painted their identifying symbols in places to mark their turf.
Mention the word graffiti and what typically comes to mind is something unpleasant and distasteful like indecent language scribbled on a wall of a store or crude pictures. Most graffiti is characterized as vandalism on property that does not belong to the culprit. Graffiti also displays negative graphics that promote some type of vulgar message such as violence, sex, drugs, gangs, and racism. On the other hand, when the terms “street” and “art” come together, a blast of colorful creations upon blank slates on the street comes to mind. Although street art is technically considered graffiti, it is a type of graffiti with positive qualities, but certain figures in society find street art to be, in some way, disruptive. If used properly, street art can be appreciated artistically and socially. Despite the negative stigma attached to graffiti, street art has emerged as a progressive valuable art form whose vast history, surge in popularity, and urge for social change warrant its classification as a fine art.
Although many people believe that graffiti is vandalism, it is in fact art because many museums display graffiti, people are interested in it, and it displays beauty and emotional power. Many people have learned to appreciate graffiti as an art form and have opened their eyes to the beauty and emotional power it holds. From the video on CBS News, “Is Graffiti Art or Vandalism,” Laura Fanning (museum visitor) explains at 1:42 “. now I see it as more of a commentary and a statement of ‘I’m leaving my mark’.” This quote exhibits a museum visitor whose perception of graffiti changed when she went to a museum that displayed graffiti.
Art is an expression of one’s mind or imagination through drawings and paintings on a canvas or words written in a book. Graffiti is an expression as well of one’s imaginations or feelings through words, or drawings displayed on a surface such as a building, wall or subway train.
Art is defined by Oxford’s Dictionary as works produced by human creative skill and imagination. The argument of whether or not graffiti is art has been around for an indeterminable amount of time. Because of many different and valid reasons, graffiti should be considered as art.
Vandals; Cornbread, Taki 183, Phase 2, Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat are only a few of the OG street artist who were able to take claim of their identity and express their art through their graffiti.
We all know what Graffiti art is; well we think we know because of the “modern” graffiti art that is still occasionally seen. However Graffiti Art has been tracked back all the way to the time of 1851. Firstly graffiti comes from the Italian word “graffiato” meaning scratched and was later called graffiti through the media as we see it today. ‘Additionally early forms of graffiti were seen back in ancient Italy at the ruins of Pompeii’ in 1851. “Painting on sidewalks, and other forms of graffiti, is still common in Rome today. Whereas Romans consider graffiti as a form of urban art, many westerners consider it vandalism unless property owners give consent to the graffiti artists.” (Cyprus, Sheri, and O. Wallace. "What Are the Origins of Graffiti?" WiseGeek. Conjecture, 02 May 2014. Web. 08 May 2014.) Even though all this might seem surprising to some and maybe even considered arguable to not be graffiti; I want to go in depth on graffiti art in America.
Graffiti has been on the rise in popularity since its beginnings fifty years ago. Danielle Crinnion provides a brief history of graffiti arguing that “Philadelphia
Graffiti is a lettering, a painting, and marks anywhere on any property (Wikepedia). Simply forms of graffiti are simply decoration some are symbols on walls or on the ground. It is a way of communicating and expressing once feeling to the world. Often it is seen as unwanted, because it damages property and is usually considered insightful. There are two types of graffiti, one is popular graffiti. It is the kind of graffiti that we see in bathroom, billboards, school desk, sidewalks, or anywhere. Where as the community based graffiti is usually based on the hip hop culture, to mark a territory for the Gang in that area.
No matter what people say about it, Graffiti is a form of self-expression. It is important to realize the amount of talent and work required to create a piece of graffiti. The scale of such a piece can be small found on a corner to massive one taking up an entire wall. However, there are varying
Graffiti is a form of art that people use to express themselves and to convey various messages to people in a particular community. In the movie "Graffiti Verite':. One of the graffiti artist explained that his purpose in doing graffiti is that it allows him to "express his anger' on the wall. Another kid by the name of "Jipsie" said that graffiti is a "form of growth". There were several different explanations that artists shared as well as several different reasons why they like graffiti. The common theme among the graffiti artist and taggers was that graffiti is simply a form of self-expression (Bryan). At the end of the film one tagger made a comment and said, "graffiti is not vandalism, but it is a beautiful crime". This comment did not make sense to me. Committing a crime, a hideous act, is not a beautiful thing to do by any means. Graffiti does not mean people can go around and draw and spray paint on other peoples property. Regardless of what types of graffiti are being expressed by the tagger, this type of self expression is considered vandalism when people decide to draw, destroy, or violate any persons property without consent. As a result of taggers committing the crime of vandalism, property owners, concerned citizens, and law enforcement officers spend too much time, money, and energy trying to put an end to the unlawful act of vandalism.
Walking down the street you see a wall mosaic that you thought was a beautiful, piece of art the next day walking past the same one you see the artist wiping it away as an officer watches. Is beautiful graffiti really all that bad? Since many graffiti artists are showing their heads the police are having trouble tracking them down so instead of wasting hundreds of dollars in the chase several cities put aside places where these painters can let their creativity fly. I admit that certain types of graffiti are bad and offensive but when you look close enough there is beauty in every can, to me, graffiti is a force for good and a beautiful way to let people inner creativity shine. Seeing graffiti or wall tags can make someone think that some of them are amazing works of art, an upside to them is that if a state or country embraced graffiti’s cultural value then they could do wonders for that city’s tourism industry, there is also the fact that it is possible to paint over
Common mediums used are stencils, prints, and murals. Graffiti is often considered to be art because of new artists, such as One of the main reasons street art is considered a crime is because it is believed to deface the property of which it has been applied to. Another problem being that Graffiti is costly to clean, in major cities the budget for cleaning graffiti can be in the millions. There is a solution to this problem that one city in Australia has applied. Police in Fremantle, Australia are focusing on getting rid of tags and less desirable graffiti but leaving the rest up because they believe it impacts the “culture and vibrancy of the city.”
At the end of the day, people should stop underestimating graffiti art. Banksy, in his book, “Banging Your Head Against A Brick Wall,” said “Graffiti is one of the few tools you have if you have almost nothing. And even if you don't come up with a picture to cure world poverty you can make someone smile while they're having a piss.” Graffiti work should be admired by everyone else because it holds so many significance whether it's only a phrase or a sketch. People shouldn't just absentmindedly assume it as the worst thing ever or as an awful thing. I agree that it can be vandalism to the public but graffiti can also be made in many other places legally so why think of it in the dark side? People should take care on how they are judging the striking art behind graffiti and criticizing it without really evaluating all the great meaning behind it.
