The first element that will be discussed in this paper is the setting. The setting in the gothic fiction is almost in a castle , cave ,cellar or vault as it reflects the horror in the story .In the beginning , The Black Cat takes place in the prison where the protagonist narrating his life story the day before being sentenced to death. This beginning shows the reader the gloomy events that will happen in the story. When he starts to write about his life, the setting changed to be with his wife in their crummy old house where there is dark underground cellar that was well adapted and constructed insecurely and had been covered with a strong plaster all over with a coarse plaster, which the humidity of the place had stopped from hardening. As well as places like the cellar described in this story are similar to the gothic setting which includes some hidden compartments that can be found in castle settings. This closet shares in the horror setting due to its capability to hide things secretly alike the protagonist's use of it to hide the body his murdered wife. Physical violence and torturing is the second gothic fiction element that will be discussed in this paper. Throughout the story the unnamed narrator did many acts that revels his violent acts. He transforms from being a good person who loves his wife and pets to become a violent person, his black cat Pluto moves from a coddled pet to oppressed animal. The reason behind the narrator`s change is alcohol because whenever he drinks he starts verbally and physically abusing his wife and pets.
