In the Effects of Religion on Domestic Conflicts, Professor Johnathan Fox attempts to define the role of religion within politics, society and conflict. He states that religious belief plays a significant role in “providing a meaningful framework for understanding the world; providing rules and standards of behavior that link individual actions and goals to this meaningful framework; organizing its adherents through its institutions and legitimatizing all related actors, actions and institutions.” This is interesting because it specifically breaks down and pinpoints the exact areas in society that religion influences and how faith-based conflict most likely arises out of it. “Anything that a religious believer perceives to be a challenge to the religious framework underlying his behavior constitutes and existential threat for the whole constituency. You know, the people. The followers; the non-followers; Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, Atheists, Humans, etc.? All of those whose lives were lost over ideologies and beliefs that seemingly were taken out of context and acted upon. Well, as Father Kirby would likely put it, the truth lies in the scriptures. Kirby, author of the article Good Religion, and the Good It Can do, states that “organized religion is not a utopia. It is an attempt to assist a community of faith to see and follow its way of life.” In other words, organized religion is more so disorganized, and the structures are dependent upon the hearts and good intentions of the believers. In the past, there have been religions that have followed less-than-noble teachings and members have used it to justify evil atrocities. One bad apple gets thrown into the mix, it really has the potential to “spoil the whole bunch,” so to speak. But that does not mean religion should be removed from society.
