Giovanni da Verrazzano: The Most Audacious Explorer of the Seas
Introduction
Giovanni da Verrazzano was born in Tuscany, Italy in 1485 to parents Piero Andrea da Verrazzano and Fiametta Capelli. His siblings were Gerolamo, Bernardo, Nicolo, and Piero (Morley). Gerolamo was the only family member that accompanied Verrazzano on his journey as a mapmaker. Gerolamo also was the one to create some of the first maps depicting the Americas (“Depression-Era Soup Kitchens”). Giovanni da Verrazzano had an excellent education in Florence, Italy, but moved to Dieppe, France, hoping to pursue a maritime exploring career. In January of 1524, King Francis I, the king of France, agreed to sponsor his trip by providing him with ships and necessary tools for the journey (Keshavarz). When he left from France in 1524, he crossed the Atlantic Ocean and reached Cape Fear. Then he stopped at a place called Arcadia, which today is most likely Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. It was only on his third embarking from land that he landed in New York Harbor (“Extraordinary Explorers and Adventurers” 69-70). This shows that he tried hard and didn’t give up. He went on multiple voyages, and that shows that he was dedicated to his career of becoming a maritime explorer.
Many people might only know him for his prominent discovery of New York Harbor, but what many people don’t know is that he was also the first person to discover Block Island and Narragansett Bay, both located in Rhode Island (Anirudh). The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, created in 1964 in honor of Verrazzano’s efforts, connects Brooklyn and Staten Island in New York Harbor (“Depression-Era Soup Kitchens”). In addition to this, two other bridges, the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge and Maryland’s Verrazano Bridge, were also named after him (Anirudh).
It is a long-with-standing stereotype that Italians love to gamble. This is true. My great grandfather, Pasquale Giovannone, played the riskiest hand of cards when he immigrated to the United States as an illegal stowaway at the age of thirteen. He forged a life for himself amidst the ever-changing social and political shifts of the early nineteenth century. The legacy he left would later lead to the birth of my father, John Giovannone, in Northern New Jersey in 1962.

Francisco Pizarro was a famous Spanish explorer. On September 13, 1524, Francisco Pizarro set sail from Panama to a conquest of Peru. He brought about eighty men and forty horses with him. In 1528, Pizarro went back to Spain managed to obtain in a group of people from Emperor Charles V. Francisco Pizarro was known for capturing the Inca Emperor, Emperor Atahualpa, in 1532. In 1533, Pizarro conquered Peru.

Christopher Columbus one of the most famous explorers with an extraordinary legacy was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. He was an Italian explorer and navigator and is very well known for his four voyages and his “discovery” of the New World. Columbus began sailing when he was just a teenager in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. Later, he moved to Lisbon, Portugal and then Spain where he spent the rest of his life. Columbus’ purpose was to find a passage to Asia by sailing West, but during his voyage he ended up in the Caribbeans and South America. Columbus propose was turned down by King John of Portugal and the rulers of England and France. After several years of being declined, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella funded Columbus’ voyage due
Henry Hudson (English seamen) started sailing with his ship named “the half moon” in 1609 for the VOC. Officially he was searching for a new trading route to Asia. Raleigh had given up hope for settlement, but in 1591 he had his hopes high again. He sent another expedition to America but it had failed. In 1595 he decided to go for himself. He ended up on Guiana instead of Virginia. 15 years later he tried once again and failed. He tried again in 1603. This time he sent Bartholomen Gilbert. He and his crew were killed by Indians.

He made his voyages under the sponsorship of King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I. He was given three main ships; the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Niña. After he got old and discovered a few things, he died on May 20, 1506.

Magellan took all the credit for everything and without his crew members he would be nothing and could not have achieved half as much. He also ended up using violence to make people change they way they believe. Magellan was not worth defending and shouldn't get all the credit he does.
Francisco Pizarro served on an expedition, which he discovered the Pacific Ocean. Henry Hudson was an English Explorer born in 1565, he is known as one of the most famous explorers.
He didn't have a very exciting life when he was younger but he did grow up sailing on short trips on the English coast. Since a young age he knew he wanted to be on the water. When he was older he sailed on countless voyages.
AMERIGO VESPUCCI (or VESPUCIO) (ves-puteh'-ee), Italian navigator, born in Florence, Italy, 9 March, 1451; died in Seville, Spain, 22 Feb., 1512. He was of a wealthy family of merchants, and received his education from his uncle, Giorgi Antonio Vespucci, a Dominican friar, a friend and colleague of Savonarola. He engaged in business, first in Florence and afterward in Seville, where he met Columbus, perhaps as early as 1493, and where in 1497 he equipped the fleet with which that navigator sailed on his third voyage. He had previously, in 1496, had charge of fitting out a fleet for the Spanish government.
Alcohol abuse, psychological abuse,and poverty are some factors that lead Luis Garavito Cubillos to be the world’s worst rapist and serial killer. Cubillos, also known as “the beast” needed to feel god like. He had the worst fantasies but the fantasies were better than real life. He would recreate the murders and soon about 172 young boys became victims of him.
The Renaissance period also brought on an age of exploration. The expeditions of Ferdinand Magellan, Jacques Cartier and Sir Walter Raleigh paved the way for the journey of the Mayflower. Cristopher Columbus set out on his first voyage at the age of fourteen. He was a well-educated man and knew that the world was round and thought that a ship could eventually reach the Far East from the opposite direction. On August 3, 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. His goal was to spread Christianity and to bring back gold, spices and silks from the Far East.
