In the world today, people are treated in different manners based off their gender, in which they can’t control. Many of the average stereotypes and gender roles affect both men and women in how they live their lives. These stereotypes can inflict physical and mental obstacles onto those who believe that they cannot be successful if they go against what is considered ‘normal.’ Not only do these stereotypes affect us today, but they became influenced by the treatment of certain genders in earlier times. The novel “Chains” expresses how many women were treated as lesser equals and viewed as insignificant in the start of the Revolutionary War. Not only can roles affect someone’s life, but they also affect society. The roles that the characters have in “Chains” impact how genders are viewed. Isabel, Madam Lockton, and Lady Seymour play the role of the weak and helpless women that are only valued for their looks and ability to perform domestic jobs. Madam Lockton “chose the prettiest of the soldier wives to wait at the tables.” because it was important to please the men and “the ugly ones and Sarah with her big belly were to stay in the kitchen to assist the cook, and wash up” (Anderson 206). The stereotypical gender roles of both men and women are portrayed by using the prettiest soldier wives to serve for they are only valued for their looks. Although the women had certain roles that they were to play, but the men did as well. The men were expected to be the leader of the house and provide for their families and were only valued for their combat skills, wealth, and their societal ranking. The gender roles in “Chains” reinforce the traditional stereotypes of men and women by impacting how society back then considered these roles to be ‘normal.’
Throughout the novel “Chains,” Laurie Halse Anderson reinforces the average gender roles and stereotypes that are used in society today and back in the 1700s, which are expressed in the roles that the characters play and their actions.
