Friar Lawrence in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet "We still have known thee for a holy man"
In reading critical analysis of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" I found that many people call Friar Lawrence a moderate man who elicits to others his voice of wisdom and reason. An example of this sort of conclusion is George Ian Duthie's opinion that Lawrence is "A very worthy man", "prudent" and "worldly-wise"(xix.xx). G.B. Harrison views him as "sympathetically treated", "wise, grave, patient"(6). Due to this continuing interpretation, the view of Friar Lawrence has not really changed through the years. Mutschman and Wentersdorf followed the herd when they stated in their book that
Friar Lawrence was one of the most important characters in the novel. Even though he was not on the stage for most of the play he greatly contributed to the tragedy that would soon happen at the end of the play. There was basically three major parts that lead to the death of Romeo and Juliet, which Friar Lawrence was involved in all of them. Friar Lawrence played a vital role in the marriage, planning and death of Romeo and Juliet. His attempts to do the right thing were noble, but because of poor planning they would soon lead to the inevitable tragedy.
5The death of Romeo and Juliet is to be blamed on 5 people: Capulet, Nurse and Mercutio, and Friar Lawrence and Prince. 6The arguments will contain the details about the characters who are to be blamed the most and why they are to be blamed. 1First, Capulet should be blamed the most for Romeo and Juliet’s death. 2. His first fault was to bear Romeo in his party.
In the play, Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, the character by the name of Friar Laurence is at fault for the star crossed lovers’ deaths. Romeo and Juliet genuinely trusted Friar Laurence and all the advice he gave them along with the plan he made for the two so they could be together. He was quick to marry them, did not have a solid plan for the two, and left Juliet to die inside the tomb. There are many reason that contribute to their cause of death but Friar Laurence is mainly to blame this great tragedy.
William Shakespeare’s plays are different from other plays because of the language he uses and his way with writing. His writing makes his plays different than other authors and special. The play Romeo and Juliet is one of the most popular plays of Shakespeare, where Romeo and Juliet die and there are a lot of people to blame for their death such as: their own families, Paris and Friar Laurence. However, Friar Laurence is the most person to blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet, because he is the one who helped them to get married secretly and he knew the couple before they met. He is the one who gave Juliet a very powerful potion to put her in a deep sleep, to fool the people around her by acting like she is dead. Friar Laurence was also very careless with the letter that he wrote to Romeo. This essay explains why Friar Laurence is to blame for their deaths.
“From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, a pair of star cross’d lovers their life, whose misadventured piteous overthrows. Doth with their death bury their parent’s strife.” (Romeo and Juliet, Prologue 5-8). There are many minor characters that are involved in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, but the Friar is most responsible because of his mindless ideas and actions. Friar Lawrence is the cause of the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. He marries the two lovers in secret, comes up with a faulty plan for Juliet, and abandons Juliet in the tomb when she needed him the most.
Friar Laurence, through his lack of good judgment, is largely responsible for the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. Rather than being supportive of them and helping them disclose their loving situation, Friar Laurence took the “easy” way out. He succumbed to their desire to elope. He secretly married Romeo and Juliet instead of standing behind them and encouraging them to confront their families with the facts about their commitment to and love for each other. As a result, an even stronger bond between them was created through marriage: "For, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone / Till holy church incorporate two in one" (2.6.36-37). Friar Laurence married Romeo and Juliet, hoping that their union would bring an end to the constant feuding between their two families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Though the friar’s intentions were good and above reproach, they were certainly missteps along a pathway to tragedy. None of the tragedies would have occurred if Romeo and Juliet were not married. When Tybalt challenged Romeo...
No one person is to blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet but Romeo was a major person that contributed to his death. To begin with Romeo states, ”Shall bitterly begin his fearful date, With this night's revels and expire the term, Of a despised life closed in my breast, By some vile forfeit of untimely death”(Act 1 Scene 4). Romeo says this while he is on his way to the Capulet’s party. He knows that he will find something that night that will lead to his death. Benvolio also tells romeo, “Romeo, away, be gone!, The citizens are up, and Tybalt slain, Stand not amazed: the prince will doom thee death, If thou art taken: hence, be gone, away!”(Act 3 Scene 1). When Romeo kills Tybalt he should’ve have thought through his actions, because Tybalt being Juliet’s cousin this would bring more hate between the two families. This
Those I blame most for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet are the Capulets; specifically Lord and Lady Capulet, and the Nurse. The Capulets failed to provide Juliet with the support she needed, causing the deaths. The deaths did not happen because of any particular events or people, but because of a build-up of events and actions.
One of the main reasons that Friar Laurence was held accountable for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet is because he married them. First of all, this marriage was done without the consent of the parents. Secondly, he could have tried to support their relationship instead of marrying them and not telling anyone. He speaks of how these two will become one in marriage; “For, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone /
Friar Laurence knew about Romeo and Juliet’s relationship and could’ve stopped it from the beginning. However, if Romeo and Juliet's parents weren't fighting in the first place then they wouldn't have to make stupid decisions that got them killed. If Friar Laurence hadn’t tried to help Romeo he probably would’ve ended up hurting more people. Friar Laurence tried his best to help Romeo when he said, “I thought thy disposition better tempered. Hast thou slain Tybalt? Wilt thou slay thyself?” (1059). This shows that Friar Laurence cares about Romeo and wants him to not kill himself. Clearly Friar Laurence was trying help, but the parents feud couldn't be
Father Lawrence is responsible for the death of Juliet. In the first place, he helped organize the marriage to Romeo. While keeping the marriage unknown to everyone else which is a hard secret to keep. In a like manner, his friend failed to get the message to Romeo on time. The letter was about Juliet’s impromptu marriage to Paris. Also, Father Laurence runs off and leaves Juliet all alone when she is the most desperate for his guidance. He gave Juliet a funeral for her family to say goodbye. Finally, he administered Juliet a sleeping potion that faked her death.
Throughout the story there are many people that contribute to the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet but, a character that stands out on the issue is the Priest, Friar Laurence. One of many senseless decisions Friar Laurence made was to agree to marry Romeo and Juliet in secret. When asked by Romeo he was very optimistic but then thought about it and figured if Romeo and Juliet married it would unite the two fighting families. As time goes on Friar Laurence begins to doubt his decision. His worries are firstly stated in Act 2, Scene 6 when at the time he and Romeo are waiting for Juliet to appear. In Friars very first lines he says” So smile the heavens upon this holy act / That after-hours with sorrow chide us not!”.
