The Metamorphosis
Gregor the main character in the story “Metamorphosis” written by Frankz Kafka which was not supposed to be published after Kafka died in 1924 but his friend, “Max Brod acted as any serious publisher would have done and ignored Kafka‘s last wishes to have all his works destroyed. Brod had them published” (Krug, 2011). Kafka was a very famous writer back in the 20th century and he spoke German language. Kafka was using his own life as a building block to help him navigate the story about Gregor. Even though he put some fiction into the story of Gregor waking up to being a cockroach, this helped Kafka with the writer and reader connection of how it is when a person is used and devalued. Gregor felt like it was his duty to try to support his family since his dad wasn’t even trying to get a job. Gregor may not have loved his family but he did show concern and cared for them. Gregor was trying to be the civil one in the house until he woke up one morning as a cockroach. The metamorphosis has taken effect but Gregor willing excepted his fate the best that he could regardless of his condition. Crick stated that, “Gregor was a member of the family who was not to be treated as an enemy; instead family duty towards him.” (Crick, 2009). Kafka intertwined his family in as the characters in the story of Metamorphosis. Kafka’s was the only son and the oldest child. Kafka’s father was a domineering person that expected him to take over the family business. Nervi stated that, “Kafka’s father viewed Franz as a failure and disapproved of his writing because he wanted Franz to become a business man like him” (Nervi, 2011). Gregor’s father was very short-tempered and had an obsession of Frankz being a business man like him which led to his father beating Frankz. Nervi said that Frankz’s father would hiss like a wild man just like Gregor’s father.
Kafka also had abuse from his father and constant yelling from his father because his son was a failure. It was further stated that, “Gregor felt as if he had let down the family because he had provided for them up until this point where he could no longer work” (Nervi, 2011). Gregor and Kafka was abused and neglected by their fathers emotionally and physically. The worse the metamorphosis got it affected Gregor’s Mentality because he lost his human contact and mobility. This led Gregor to turn back on his family and give them the same abuse that they gave
