The important thing is to keep moving forward no matter what happens, In the book “Flowers for Algernon”, Charlie gordon,A genius with a lost heart, In Progress report #7 Charlie explains to us that he's going too keep reading and keep trying to learn new things to keep is intelligence level at a good place. I believe this is a indication of charlie's real personality. Charlie is a genius in math,english,science,history etc, but emotionally Charlie has the mindset of a 8 year old , but that doesnt stop the fact the his a hard working man who doesn't give up that easily. I say this because love for Charlie has been all that grate for example in many occasions when Charlie is with Alice he can't seem to get himself to make a move until much later even so he feels uncomfortable being around a girl until he meets fray who is more of a person that charlie has seual intercourese with and dances with at night more than anything but somehow helps charlie in his love life but in reality charlie does not love her. Also related to this around the middle of the story charlie meets a women in the park wich he starts talking to her and she arouses charlie and they end up going charlie home, but before they start doing anything she tells him she 5 months pregnant, charlie reacts in an aggressive way and starts telling her thats filthy,and that she should be ashamed of herself another event is when charlie is eleven years old and has a crush on harriet,a girl with dimples and long curls, charlie has a little gold color locket with a strong and he decides to give it too harriet for valentines day he also wants to give her a little note, he acts one of his “friends” too write it down for him but his friend,Hymie, writes some mean and nasty things instead the next day harriet's brothers beat up Charlie thinking he wrote the things on the note, these are big hits in Charlies love life,But despite all that

Still in the end Charlie showed his integrity because he could of flip off and start drinking again but he only had one drink as he promise himself to have every day, and because he wanted to prove to his sister in law that he is not the same person anymore. The scientists who performed the experiment now need a human subject to test, and Charlie has been recommended to them by his night-school teacher, Miss Kinnian. Charlie's a good candidate for the procedure, because even though he currently has an I.Q. of only 68, he is willing, highly motivated and eager to learn. He's convinced that if he could only learn to read and write, the secret of being smart would be revealed to him.
He is then judged even harsher which is why you shouldn’t try to be someone that you’re not. You should stay true to yourself. In the story, it says “Their going to use me! I am so exited I can hardly write” (Keyes page 351). This implies that Charlie is anxious to undergo the surgery that will make him smart. Another part says “If you volenteer for this experament you mite get smart”. (Keyes page 351) This shows that the operation will make him more intelligent so he can fit in with everyone else. This proves that Charlie is trying to be someone he is not in order to fit
Soon however, Charlie would encounter challenges he never faced with the intelligence of a 6 year old. Before his surgery, Charlie had great friends in Miss Kinnian and the bakery workers. After the surgery, the relationship between Charlie and everyone he knew would take a drastic turn. A growing problem for Charlie’s is his extremely mixed emotions toward the opposite gender. He starts a serious relationship with Alice Kinnian, his former teacher.
Charlie’s intelligence started to fall. Slowly he lost it all, from foreign languages to math equations to reading and writing.
At this stage of the story we are compelled to feel a little bit sorry for Charlie who has been separated from his father.
If a man does not know of hurt and suffering, he should not have to know. Before Charlie knew the truth of his life and was able to look back on it, he didn’t know of some horrible feelings. He never had to feel ugly, unwanted, alone, and most of all, ashamed. After finding out how all of the men he thought were his friends only used him for free laughs, Charlie feels so humiliated.
In society, many individuals attempt to change their appearance or personality for the benefit of others or to improve their own self worth. Ultimately, these changes have the ability to boost one’s self esteem. In Daniel Keys’s Flowers For Algernon, Charlie Gordon undergoes surgery to increase his intelligence. Even though his intelligence is not a permanent transformation, it allows him to become more aware about his own life. Charlie’s transformation is ethical and therefore the result is worth the attempt.
For Charlie, Ignorance is bliss. He realizes that his so called ? friends? were just using him to entertain their perverse humor. Also, he was also fired from the job that he loved so much because his new intelligence made those around him feel inferior and scared.
Charlie was innocent, he didn’t have many social experiences. Think back when the first time Charlie saw Laura’s dead body. “Why would you bring me here? I shouldn’t be here. I have to go back home. You have to tell someone about this.” His anxious shows he didn’t want to participate this mess, in part, he’s smart enough to know it would be a trouble, but he’s also full of fear. After Jasper’s persuasion, Charlie decides to help him find the real murderer. Craig Silvey gives us a huge surprise at the beginning of the book, we might think it’s a story about children’s adventure. Today, Charlie is closer to his family. He spends time with his mother father and sister. His relationship with his wife, Autumn, while occasionally rocky, has been a positive influence. He is a responsible young adult, who has been fortunate to have gotten the intervention he needed as a troubled teenager.
He's also a very bad alcoholic with some very bad things he has done hiding deep inside of his body. Still, you wish to have to root for him. Despite his many flaws, Charlie is a person whom practically every person can’t help to like. It’s surprising that Charlie’s so likable seeing that his wild prior of uncontrollable alcoholism, his feasible complicity in his wife’s dying, and the fact that he pretty much abandoned his child.
The fact is that Charlie Gordon just wanted to be smart & to be able to fit in.The main character is Charlie Gordon from “Flowers for Algernon” & Charlie’s life was a lot better after the A.I surgery in his image & i agree.Charlie should have had took the A.I surgery. The 3 reasons are he proved the operation was a failure Algernon-Gordon effect,He would never experienced love, & earned more money than before.

The American Library Association reports that this novel was banned as an obscene for its love scenes. When the main character, Charlie Gordon, increases his IQ from 68 to a level that makes him a genius (after received experimental brain surgery), his maturity leads him to fall in love with his teacher, and a sexual encounter ensues. This caused Flowers for Algernon to be banned and challenged in many places (Plant City, Florida- 1976, Emporium, Pennsylvania- 1977, Oberlin High School (Ohio) - 1983, among others). Most people consider the sexual scenes fairly mild, but there are those who consider any mention of sexual behavior inappropriate for teens or pre-teens, hence the attempts at censorship. Many of the challenges have proved unsuccessful, but the book has occasionally been banned from school libraries including some in Pennsylvania and Texas. Flowers for Algernon has won numerous awards, even for the film, and it is regularly taught in schools around the world; therefore, it should remain on shelves.
We can all sympathize with Charlie on the surface, we have all made mistakes that we have to live with. Charlie is attempting to move forward with his life and erase the mistakes of his past. The ghosts of his past torment him repeatedly throughout the story, his child's guardians despise him and his old friends do not understand him.
