How can an element define genre? Elements in a story sometimes help to develop or figure out the main section or genre of a text. The four elements I chose were fear, suspense, surprise, and mystery. An element can be determined by an phrase, or sentence that catches your attention. Foreshadowing is also a element of a story. It is the planting of clues to indicate the outcome of a story-it compares to suspense; which is out of curiosity. Elements of a story give the setting a purpose to fulfill. To begin with, most texts of a horror genre contain fear. Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat; to be afraid. “I had my head in and was about to open the lantern”- Poe. My thinking was what was he about to do with the lantern? I was curious about what was about to happen. Also in “The Monkey’s Paw”- line 4,”Who possessed ideas about the game involving radical changes”- Jacobs. This gave me a thinking of to why were there radical changes? Surprise is of something unexpected to cause someone to feel mild astonishment or shock. “I admit the deed!-tear up the planks!-here, here!-it is the beating of the hideous heart!”- Poe; this was a surprise because he told upon himself. His guilt caused him to spill what he’d done. Also, “it moved; it twisted in my hand like a snake”- Jacob. This was a shocked surprise, like a more oh my god moment. Lastly, Jacob- “The knocking ceased suddenly, although the echoes of it were still in the house……”. It was a shock and surprise as if to what made this, it was also like suspense. Surprise gives a wow moment or emotion. Furthermore, an horror genre contain mystery. Mystery is something that is difficult or impossible to understand or explain. “It was a low, dull, quick sound”- Poe. This is a curious situation as is what made the nose.
