Family Images Analysis

There are several images that were shown in this small collection. The goal of the images is to portray how different families eat around the world. The first thing I noticed is the amount of food in each picture. The family in the United States had the most amount of food in their picture while Mali had the least. This shows that the American family probably consumed the most in one week because they had the most food available. However, upon further inspection, the food depicted in the family in the Unites States was mostly packaged food. Therefore, they may just have more food because it has the capacity to remain stored for a longer time than non-packaged foods. For example, if the family is farmers it may explain the abundance of fruits and vegetables or rice. The images do not depict any meat; it would be hard to believe that all the families are vegetarian but we would not know from looking at the images. Meat is an important source of nutrients and a large amount could impact health. Religion may also play a part on how and when a person may eat. However, it is difficult to determine a person’s religion from seeing them. Religion can be a factor in deciding to be a vegetarian or not or eating later in the day or earlier. It is also unclear if the families always ate the way depicted in the pictures. On page 90 the passage states, “But increasing globalization and the expansion of the food industry have led to rapid changes in food customs” (D’Aluisio). However, the reader cannot witness the change due to globalization because there is nothing to compare the image to. Since there is no before and after image means that it is a simple comparison between the different food and families from around the world. This does not display the author’s purpose of the evolution of the way people eat and how they eat. From the images, there is no way of knowing if they had always eaten in such a way or if they were impacted by the globalization which could have overrun
