The mental state of Macbeth transformed greatly from the beginning and to the end of the play. His demise was not all due to him, but the influences he faced throughout the duration of the play. He allowed both the persuasion of outside influences and his ambitious mentality to dictate his thoughts and actions which eventually resulted in mental agony. The prophesies of the witches and the non-ladylike mentality of Lady Macbeth were the primary sources of his madness. It all began in the beginning of the play when the three witches approached Macbeth and provided him with their prophesies of his future. His first mistakes was even considering what the witches told him as any true guarantee to what his life was going to be like in the future. Witches are like modern-day fortune tellers and definitely not of God. God is an all-knowing, all seeing and is the only one who has true knowledge of what he has planned for us in the future. The Bible tells us in Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou calmest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations” This is evidence that God already knows what he has in store for our lives even before we are born. Therefore, to seek to seek for the answer or guidance with what we are to do with our lives outside of God can only result in disappointment or death. God further reassures us of his plans for our life in Jeremiah 29:11 when he declares, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” The only advice I would have given Macbeth is not not rush things or let other people influence him as much as he allowed them to. I would stress to him the importance of developing a relationship with God and study his Word which will aid in helping him build trust and faith in the one who is truly in control of life.
