Throughout works of literature, conflict is often a central theme amongst parents and their children. Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner,” for instance, depicts a rather broken relationship between a father and a son. The underlying conflict is used to go against one another. The novel connects this idea through feelings of unworthiness, believing as if one is the complete opposite of another, and deception through a crucial lie. The overall concept of conflict contributes to a misunderstanding resulting in a broken relationship. In the beginning of the novel, the very observant Amir begins to express feelings of guilt for his mother’s death. “... I had killed his beloved wife, his beautiful princess, hadn’t I?” With these expressions shown from Amir’s father, Baba, Amir is certain that Baba blames him for the death of his mother. The lack of communication between both Amir and Baba is evident because Amir feels as if he is unworthy of his father’s affection. Amir grew up with his devoted household servant’s son (Hassan), or so he thought, and engaged with him as if he were a brother. In actuality, both Amir and Hassan were Baba’s children. The initial feelings of deception occur long after Baba’s death. The internal conflict felt by Baba dealt with the personalities of both of his sons. Amir became known as the son “who won’t stand up for himself”, and Hassan’s personality included remaining loyal and standing up for others. By not expressing to Amir long after their journey to America from Afghanistan that Hassan was his brother shows that Baba could never show his true
