You can see this theory in place throughout the whole movie In Time. Will Salas grew up in the ghetto district of Dayton and according to Marx’s theory could be labeled as part of the proletariat. He works for a factory that makes the devices that are touched to the arms of the people and are used to transfer time to and from individuals. He was exploited for his work and at one point in the movie he goes to get paid and he gets paid less than normal and he asks why and the payer said that the quota was raised for the workers to an unreasonable amount and that he did not meet the quota. This is an example of the bourgeoisie, the factory, exploiting the proletariat for work and not paying them enough for their work. The bourgeoisie in the movie …show more content…

Anomie was coined by the sociologist Emile Durkheim during his book titled Suicide in 1897. He described anomie as a condition in which society provides little moral guidance and when there is a lack of the usual social or ethical standards in a group within a society. This fits perfectly into the movie because there is very much a lack of social and ethical control. The only thing that keeps any kind of control over the society is the Timekeepers. The Timekeepers’ job is to keep a watch over the society and keep as much crime like killing for time or stealing time out of the society. They are supposed to keep the society running smoothly and efficiently but because of the exploitation and extreme poverty that the bourgeoisie has caused, it leaves the lower class that live in the ghetto with no other options left. This was an excellent film that all students studying sociology could watch and learn from different perspectives of sociological thinking. Through Karl Marx’s theory, the viewer could see the division of the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. The bourgeoisie were the people that lived in New Greenwich and the Timekeepers and the proletariats were all of the other citizens who were poor and barely able to survive. According to Marx, this type of society is very ineffective and useless because of many factors including anomie where there is no moral guidance to those in need and a lack of social control because of the exploitation of the proletariats. But, Weber saw this same society differently. Weber would say that the society in this movie was very effective because societies are meant to run on capitalism where there is an upper class controlling everything and a lower class that needs to do all of the work to keep the society running smoothly. According to Marx, social integration is needed in a society so the different parts of the society can combine to work together. Even though both of these sociologists had different thoughts about the society within this movie, both of their opinions are very important to how we view this society and all societies
