“The return to reality was as painful as the return to consciousness after taking an anesthetic” (Ethan From 7). Naturalism and realism, a movement that occurred in the late 19th century and early 20th century, lived to cause great importance in literature. This movement showcased a character’s moral and rational qualities in conflicts that allowed many authors to take advantage of it for their works of literature (britannica.com). The three works that I will be discussing include Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton, The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, and The Outcasts of Poker Flats. The main conflicts and plot of the entire story were based on economic conflicts that greatly affect the characters. During chapter 8, Ethan has the idea to start a new life with Maddy and leave the farm and Zenza behind. Ethan wrote in a letter to Zeena, “I'm going to try my luck West, and you can sell the farm and mill, and keep the money." His pen paused on the word, which brought home to him the relentless conditions of his lot. If he gave the farm and mill to Zeena what would be left for him to start his own life with?”(8) Ethan’s farm was the only asset of wealth he owned and without it he would be broke. Ethan could easily leave on his own and find a job along the way to live for himself, but it would be impossible to have enough to provide more Daddy as well. As a result, Ethan could not go through with his plan that he had been looking forward to. This conflict of physical limitations proved to be too much for them to handle as they ended up not making it out alive after the storm passed. Physical Limitations provide information about characters and the plot, and on why events occur throughout the story. This limitation portrayed the characters and why they couldn't make it out alive. These three limitations that were present in this story all provide readers with further understanding of why characters behaved the way they did and provide reason on why the outcome of the plot occurred. The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is a story about the life of a working class family during the American Industrial Revolution. The highlights of this novel are about the meat industry and the ways in which it was not safe and very corrupt. There are three main social conflicts that arise as a result of the information presented in this book. Paragraph one provides the information, “For it was the custom, as they found, whenever meat was so spoiled that it could not be used for anything else, either to can it or else to chop it up into sausage.”
