My Favorite Short Story: Tanraj Jhutty We have read many great short stories in class, but my favorite short story had to be "The Lottery". I really enjoyed this troy because of the use of literary devices. Some of the devices that were used are irony, foreshadowing and symbolism. There are many other literary devices which were used to add to and help build up the stories plot.

First off I will be talking about the stories use of irony. There were two main uses of irony, the first was with the names of two people and the second was the way that the story played out. In the story there were to characters who ran the lottery, Mr. Summers and Mr. Graves. This is ironic because one of the characters names is summers and the others is graves. Summer is usually thought of to be happy, good and fun, where as graves makes you think of death, sadness and unhappiness. This was a great contrast using simple words and made me giggle a bit on the inside. The story was also ironic because of the way it played out. In the lottery someone is chosen to be killed for good crops, one of the characters came to the lottery in a very good mood and forgot that the lottery as even going to happen. She was the one who was then chosen and then began to complain that it was unfair. …show more content…

When the story started we thought that the lottery might have been something positive. This is because in today's society the lottery involves money and everyone loves money. But as the story went on we began to get an idea that the lottery was not a good thing. This was because of the authors words and how he progressed the story without making it to obvious. Also near the end of the story we understood why the children were pilling stones, they were getting them ready to assault the victim. But we never thought anything of
