The Conch and the Beast “Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage's whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men.” Ayn Rand. In his novel “Lord of the Flies” British author, William Golding uses the conch and the beast to show the loss of innocence. When their plane crashes into a tropical deserted island the boys have to find a way to survive without adults. Ralph is elected chief and tries to maintain a similar lifestyle to what they have left behind, but the addition of rules makes the island savage. When the conch was first blown by Ralph all the boys came to the noise. “Where’s the man with the megaphone.” [LOTF pg. 1] Near the end of the book, after Jack starts his own tribe, Ralph wanted to hold a meeting to try and recreate the unity which they had earlier on. “He put the conch to his lips and began to blow. Savages appeared, painted out of recognition, edging round the ledge toward the neck.” [LOTF pg. 175] This quote shows that Ralph was scared to use the conch because he was did not think it would unite them anymore. When they first landed on the island they were calm and civilized. But at the end, after experiencing death and committing a murder, they are not the same. “Jack had to think for a moment before he could remember what rescue was.” [LOTF pg. 53] This quote shows that they forgot about returning to civilization. They have given up on being rescued and going back to their everyday life. “But the island was scorched up like dead wood- Simon was dead- and Jack had.. The tears began to flow and sobs shook him.” [LOTF pg. 202] This shows that Ralph was scared and sad about being rescued since he knew that the boys would not be able to return to their normal life after what they have experienced.
