A fence is actually there to keep people in and to keep people out. There are people who build a metaphoric fence for themselves to protect themselves and to protected their loved ones. August Wilson’s play “Fences” illustrates how the symbol of a fence describes the relationships of an African American family living in Chicago during the mid 1950s. Troy, the father of three and a husband of Rose, had a hard life when he was younger. Served fifteen years in prison for robbery, been living with an abusive father and was abandoned by his mother and had his girlfriend taken away by his father when he was 15. While his son, Cory, is trying to play football and have his papers signed for a recruiter, Troy is trying to keep himself and Cory seperated because he don’t want Cory’s life to be like his. Troy told Rose “I don’t want him to be like me! I want him to move as far away from my life as he can get”. He also stated ,” I decided 17 years ago that boy wasn’t getting involved into sports. Troy and Cory are building this fence. Bono, a friend of Troy , realized that Rose wanted the fence to be built to keep Troy and Cory together and inside because she loves them. On act 2 , page 2, Bono told Troy “, Some people build fences to keep people out ….and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you.” After Troy’s confession of him seeing another woman and having a child by the woman, Rose explained how her metaphoric fence is there to protect her family from being half. Rose told Troy how she don’t want her family to be half because everybody in her side family got a different mother or father and how it’s hard for her to tell who’s who.
