A security guard works in any building or area that needs protection from theft, fire, vandalism, and illegal entry. For every security guards job it depends on where they live and work. Every security guard has a different task. Some work in airports. If you work in an airport you might have to search travelers for weapons, explosives, or drugs. They may have also check cargo for illegal items. There are security guards that work museums and art galleries. These security guards have to make sure no one steals, damages, or touches artwork or historical artifacts. They also help people if they have questions and bring people to safety in case if there is a fire or an earthquake. There is actually much more than doing just that. Security guards might patrol in a car and others may walk around in buildings to make sure nothing suspicious is going on. Others may patrol on foot. Most government buildings and military buildings are guarded at all times. They also have to direct people to an emergency exit in dangerous situations. Some guards work with security dogs. The only down side of the work conditions is that you may have to work on some holidays and weekends. Very few guards are armed while working. Many industries find weapons unnecessary for security guards. Banks are one of the few businesses that have armed guards. If the guards are standing or on patrol they may be standing at a gate or door. They may have to stand for long hours at a time. Some security jobs can be a routine or repetitive. Most employers prefer applicants to have a high school diploma. Many security guards receive on the job training. Length of training depends on the employer. For example if you were based at a nuclear power plant you would receive more training then if you were based at school. If you were going to be an armed security guard you would have to have training in weapon handling and legal use of force. Secondary education is not usually required by employers, an associate degree in criminal justice or a related field will increase your chances of getting moved up in the security field. You need to be physically fit and able to deal with any undesirable characters that you may encounter. You must be good with people and follow strict rules and regulations. Alos important to have good hearing and eyesight. Mentally alert and willing to work evenings. Ability to work in stressful conditions and emergencies.
