Recommended: How else can increasing the minimum driving age be addressed

Do you remember the first time you drove? Was it when you were sixteen? You must have felt amazing, free, and alive. It´s a wonderful feeling, but the problem is state legislators are considering raising the minimum driving age. The minimum age should stay the same because the brain is almost fully developed at the age of 18, so it is easier to learn to drive when you are 16 and it is hard for students to get to school, extracurricular activities, or jobs.
Wanting to move the driving age to 18 is understandable because 1 out of 4 teens get into car accidents, and they would just like to make the roads safer. However, this is completely wrong due to the fact starting the driving age earlier gives teens a head start on their driving development. …show more content…

Just as it is more difficult to learn a new language at an older age, the same applies to driving. When teens are introduced to driving at an early age, they learn valuable skills and become competent drivers more quickly and easily. This in turn makes the roads safer for everyone because there are always more experienced drivers on the roads. When a sixteen year old learns to drive, because their brain is not fully developed, it is still easier for them to learn to drive, and they can acquire all possible skills, however if you were to learn to drive at the age of 18 there is more of a chance that you would not acquire all of the skills needed to drive safely on the roads. Many students in high school have extracurricular activities or jobs. When they can’t drive, this inhibits their ability to get home safely and efficiently. More than 7.6 million students played school sports in the 2010-2011 sports seasons, and 1 and 4 students work. Other students participate in musical activities, hobbies, lessons, and more. With all of these activities, it is imperative that students should get home safely and easily. Think about this: if students are forced to wait for a ride after extracurricular activities or jobs, they may not have sufficient time to complete their drivers’ education homework, thus impairing their potential to obtain safe driving
