The United States of America is the land of the free and the home of the brave according to the Star-Spangled Banner, the country’s national anthem. From a young age, Americans are told that capitalism is the only economic system that works, that communism is an evil form of government. Communism is looked down upon by many Americans because many leaders of communist countries are corrupt. Instead of distributing the wealth among the people, the way communism is designed, the leaders take most of it for him or her self. Americans are told that capitalism equals freedom, and perhaps in a way this is true. But what else does capitalism imply? It causes the oppression of many. Many passages express the uselessness of working hard. “All things are wearisome; more than one can express” (1:8) exemplifies that everything one does will just cause one to be tired. One tires oneself out to the point of exhaustion, and with no real gain. “What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done; there is nothing new under the sun” (1:9) illustrates that no one is original or unique and there is no point of repeating actions that have taken place already because of someone else. “The people long ago are not remembered, nor will there be any remembrance of people yet to come by those who come after them” (1:11) demonstrates that no matter what one does, after time that person will be forgotten. There is no point in doing things that years after will be long forgotten. With every action causing fatigue, copying other actions fatigue, and all being forgotten over time, there is no point in working for anything at all. Striving for success and working hard are pointless actions that just waste time and energy. The amount of capital one has does not define one’s happiness or meaningfulness of one’s life.
