The epic poem, Beowulf, is centered around three main battles that held great importance throughout the story. The main character, Beowulf, is very skilled in the art of war. Since he was a young boy he has always held hero qualities and characteristics. During his rule of the kingdom he would be pinpointed by trouble, mostly in the form of invaders. Over the course of the epic, Beowulf duels with three main characters Grendel, Grendel 's mother, and the Dragon. After the peaceful transition of power from King Sheafson to Beowulf the kingdom ran smooth for some time. On a night after some time of peace, Grendel, came forth from the lowlands listening in on their nightly caroling traditions. Beowulf accept the challenge of slaying Grendel’s mother because he feels it is necessary for the security of the village. He also accepts this challenge because he will be offered many fortunes, and fame will be promised if victory is secured. As Beowulf duels with Grendel’s mother deep under the surface of the swamp, Danes up on land lose hope and retreat back to the village in sorrow fearing that they have lost their beloved fighter. The similarities within the first two battles are undeniable. The outcome was the same, meaning Beowulf won convincingly. Both battles were started in the same manner, an invader comes in the town hall and steals people and possessions from the castle. Beowulf is launched into action and honors the call by fighting and destroying both monsters. After he destroys both aggressors, the town celebrates Beowulf and thanks him for protecting them by throwing huge parties and partaking in gigantic feasts. The third battle was different in most cases than the first two that occurred. First off, Beowulf lost the battle and died as a result. Even in this battle, Beowulf fights his battle by himself to prove his strength to many, he was also much older when he fought this battle which may have led to his demise. The third story is also similar in the fact that he responded to adversity without hesitation and he consistently fought these battles to save the throne hall or avenge
