Recommended: Essays on racial issues within sports

Baseball is cleaning up its image with a new drug testing policy implemented for the baseball season. The new agreement between the players, the owners, and Major League Baseball to test for performance enhancing drugs is a vast improvement over the previous deal. Although enhancing drug seem trivial, it is in fact crucial of today’s concern over the enhancing drug plenty of room for those who want to cheat. “ I am an athlete and the I think performance enhancing drugs are trivial because affected by the use of illegal drugs, raises concerns about ethics and morality in the world of baseball”. Let’s face it; using performance enhancing drugs is cheating.
In these following articles “We, the Public, Place the Best Athletes on Pedestals”by William Moller, and “Cheating and CHEATING” by Joe Posnanski, I found time to consider the use of steroids in baseball for the first time. In these essays, Moller and Posnanski tapped into the running commentary about performance enhancing substances and their relative acceptability in the baseball arena. “We, the Public, Place the Best Athletes on Pedestals declare that the entire steroid outcry is pure hypocrisy” [Moller, p.548], while Posnanski challenged “baseball in Willie Mays’s time, like baseball in every time, was rife with cheating and racism and alcoholism and small-mindedness” [Posnanski, p.556]. Both pieces seemed in agreement that substance use in baseball is typical, and I find it hard to believe otherwise, except in obvious rebuttal of the facts. But this line of thinking extends out into a more global conversation about when it is acceptable to use drugs, and when it is not. Let’s face it; using performance enhancing drugs is cheating. Why would you want to risk what that does to your body to get an extra base or a hit? They need to learn that some things need to be achieved by doing hard work, and not by cheating yourself and getting ahead of many other players. There is too much risk of side effects then to help raise your chance at an extra salary. Play the game right and play it safe!

The consequences for taking steroids have to be much stronger than they are now. For the first positive test, I would like the player to be suspended for one full season. Hopefully losing a year’s worth of salary would stop them from ever using the steroids again. If there is a second offense, I feel the player should be given a lifetime ban from the MLB. During the 1980’s Major League Baseball was experiencing a home run drought. Home run totals were down as far as they had been since Babe Ruth, and fans were seemingly becoming bored with the sport. Players needed to find a quick way to boost their power and performance in order to keep the sport alive and to keep bringing in their paychecks.
