English Barriers
Studying in the United States (US) is a dream of many international students in the world. However, every dream has its price. If international students want to study in the US, they have to overcome the first barrier and also the most difficult one. It is the English barrier. It is the most challenging problem that international students always have to face when they study in the US. There are three reasons that make English becomes the barrier. Firstly, English is just the international students’ second language. Secondly, the differences in the culture make it more difficult to overcome. Lastly, the fear of speaking English in front of others is the main factor that creates the language barrier.

There is one thing that everyone knows is learning a language is much easier than using it. Everyone can learn English, but when it comes to speaking, it becomes the most difficult barrier. Because international students do not speak English as their first language, so of course they will lose their confidences when they talk to the natives. In the article “Barriers”, Niella says that “ I easily lose the train of thought in my conversation. I feel that I am not being natural and start questioning the way I communicate and relate with people. I worry much about the “how to” that conversation is not always as relaxing as it should be” (p. 15). Therefore, if international students are worried too much about making mistakes when speaking in English, they will lose confidence to start a conversation. As the author says, he is always afraid to talk to Americans. He is afraid to be judged that his English is not good. He is afraid that the people who talk to him will say something he does not know or may be they will be bored because of his broken English. Because of all these reasons, he builds up the wall, the barrier between him and people who speak English. Even Though English is their second language, they have to master it. It is a hard language with lots of vocabulary, grammar, slang, and idioms, but if they want to master it, they can. They just need a good English foundation before they come to America. It will help them learn faster. Culture is another problem for international student. As Barna says, the best way to overcome the cultural differences is “ to study the history, political structure, art, literature, and language if time permits ( p.68)”. The most important thing is confidence, without confidence, international students will always struggling with English.
