When Emmett Klein woke up on August 12th he had no idea what was in store for this sunny San Francisco day. With a name like ‘Klein’ you would assume he comes from money right? Wrong. Emmett is your average banker at the Wells Fargo Bank on Market street. He has one cat named Marly, and other than that he lives alone in a fairly decent studio above a run down korean restaurant. He wasn’t very social, he rarely went out to parties or social gatherings at all for that matter. He often wondered why he had decided to stay in the most populated city in California, but he already knew the answer to that question. He knew nothing else. Several works we have read thus far have criticized the prosperity of American suburbia. Jack Kerouac's The Dharma Bums, Philip Roth's Goodbye, Columbus, and an excerpt from Lawrence Ferlinghetti's poem "A Coney Island of the Mind" all pass judgement on the denizens of the middle-class and the materialism in which they surround themselves. However, each work does not make the same analysis, as the stories are told from different viewpoints.
The tenement was the biggest hindrance to achieving the American myth of rags to riches. It becomes impossible for one to rise up in the social structure when it can be considered a miracle to live passed the age of five. Children under the age of five living in tenements had a death rate of 139.83 compared to the city’s overall death rate of 26.67. Even if one did live past the age of five it was highly probable he’d become a criminal, since virtually all of them originate from the tenements. Brian purchased the finest penthouse that his money could buy. After all, “I deserve it”, he would boast to friends. Expensive white Italian silk suits, alligator shoes, and a red Lamborghini sports car with license plates that read “MONEY” were his trademark. His penthouse apartment held a sweeping vista of the city along with elegantly appointed rooms, marble entry, a swimming pool and a sauna. Art work from the masters and rare collections were an impressive site to visitors. Brian had all the latest toys and electronics gadgets a young man could desire. A staff of servants cooked, cleaned and pampered him where ever he desired.
Emmett Till was born on July 25, 1941 in Chicago Illinois. He went to an all black school, but was taught to treat everyone equally (Death of Emmett Till). Chicago wasn’t as racist as the South, so Emmett was taught to respect everyone at an early age. Till wasn’t close to his father because his mother left Till’s father when he was very young (Vox). Emmett Till never got to know his father because his father was killed because of rape (Vox). He had a rough childhood, and to make things worse, he contracted polio at age six. As he grew older, he outgrew polio and his mother remarried and then left her husband again (Vox). Her ex-husband would threaten Emmett’s mother, and Emmett would have to stand up to her ex-husband (Vox).
Los Angeles is a place with a dynamic history. It has grown to be one of the most diverse cities in the world as a whole. Despite the diversity for which it is known for, the city has always had a striving conflict due to racial and class tension. The social stratification of its past continues to take its toll as dividing lines persist in contemporary Los Angeles. Furthermore, these dividing lines redefine place in Los Angeles, whether geographically or personally, to be subject to race and class. Fluidity has become evident recently however it is more common for the identity of people to be fixed in society. Through the novel Southland, by Nina Revoyr, and various means of academic sources, one is further able to explore the subject of race, place, and reinvention in Los Angeles.
Michael MacDonald’S All Souls is a heart wrenching insider account of growing up in Old Country housing projects located in the south of Boston, also known as Southie to the locals. The memoir takes the reader deep inside the world of Southie through the eyes of MacDonald. MacDonald was one of 11 children to grow up and deal with the many tribulations of Southie, Boston. Southie is characterized by high levels of crime, racism, and violence; all things that fall under the category of social problem. Social problems can be defined as “societal induced conditions that harms any segment of the population. Social problems are also related to acts and conditions that violate the norms and values found in society” (Long). The social problems that are present in Southie are the very reasons why the living conditions are so bad as well as why Southie is considered one of the poorest towns in Boston. Macdonald’s along with his family have to overcome the presence of crime, racism, and violence in order to survive in the town they consider the best place in the world.
The time span this book occurred in is from July 2006 to April 2007 in Charleston, South Carolina. Portraying as a homeless man, Shepard starts off in Crisis Ministries, a homeless shelter that would have “the resources necessary to get him [me] back on his [my] feet,” (Chapter 1, page 9) which was a great kick-starter for his project. Shepard would move into an attic of one of his boss's, George, friend, Mickey, because it was the “best all-around deal that he [I] was going to find,” (Chapter 11, page 137) and because he wanted to leave Crisis Ministries, due to Shepard accepting that the Crisis Ministries was unacceptable to consider to stay in. Afterward, Shepard bought an apartment with his co-worker, Derrick's, cousin, Bubble Gum, because Shepard “wanted something more permanent.” (Chapter 12, page 167) At the end of his story, Shepard ends his project short and moved back to his childhood home of Raleigh, North Carolina because “his [my] mom’s cancer returned and with even greater aggression (Chapter 16, page 203).
Between the 1960s and the 1980s, the priorities of Americans shifted from a patriotic concern for the country’s welfare to a concern for self-advancement. “A 1980 study by UCLA and American Council on Education indicated that college freshmen were more interested in status, power, and money than at any time during the past 15 years. Business Management was the most popular major” (Whitley). Similarly, in the graphic novel, Sin City written by Frank Miller, wealth, power and status play an important role in the outcome of and setting of the book. The main character, Marv, is a strong, lonely man who has a personal vendetta against the most powerful man of Sin City, Cardinal Roark. Miller shines light on the culturally prevalent desire for power, status and wealth, which ocurred in the late 1970s. The purpose of this book is to show his readers, the adults of the 1990s, what kinds of mistakes and corruption occurred in the generation before them. He does this by portraying wealthy figures as all-powerful, exposing the environment that unequal distribution of wealth breeds, and he uses Marv as a figure for the audience to identify with.

The author of Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich, began her experiment in Key West because she lived near there. Then she moved to Portland, ME since it was mostly white. She finished her investigation in Minnesota, where she thought there would be a pleasant stability between rent and wages. From the beginning, she ruled out high profile cities as a result of the high-rent and the lacking amount of jobs. As a secretive journalist, she related the near poverty experience to a life long ago when she was a child or raising her own children, as a result she endured the crushing feeling of anxiety. She knew she had a home to return to and her savings to fall back on therefore, the feeling of anxiety would not be experienced
No black school was available locally so he was forced to move. He said "Good-bye" to his adopted parents, Susan and Moses, and headed to Newton County in southwest Missouri. Here is where the path of his education began. He studied in a one-room schoolhouse and worked on a farm to pay for it. He ended up, shortly after, moving with another family to Fort Scott in Kansas. In Kansas, he worked as a baker in a kitchen while he attended the High School. He paid for his schooling with the money he earned from winning bake-off contests. From there he moved all over bouncing from school to school. "College entrance was a struggle again because of racial barriers."2 At the age of thirty he gained acceptance to Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
Raymond Carver was born on May 25, 1938, in Clatskanie, Oregon, a sawmill town in the Columbia River. His father, Clevie Raymond Carver, worked in the sawmill as a saw-filer. Raymond worked for the mill at the age he became old enough to work. His father was a vicious alcoholic; ultimately foreshadowing Raymond's alcohol problem. Carver's mother, Ella Casey Carver, she was employed to raise the families income by acting as a waitress and retail jobs. His working class family faced poverty among other families in his neighborhood. Carvers father enjoyed telling and reading stories to him. Carver's father let him know stories about his heritage and likewise read to him stories. When Carver was able to pick his own books or magazines to read, Carver read magazines like "Sports Afield," "Argosy" and "Outdoor life," and some of his most loved authors included Thomas B. Costain and Edgar Rice Boroughs. Readings from these scholars motivated him to start writing his own stories at an early age.
Sherman Alexie’s Gentrification first sets out to show the effect a white man has on his black community, but ends out taking a deeper dive into the protagonist, instead. Gentrification is littered with the internal struggles this person faces as a minority in his community. The white protagonist of this short story appears very self-conscious of his race, perhaps even apologetic.
