INTRODUCTION

Basically, embroidery is an ancient form of needlework that has been used worldwide to embellish textiles for decorative and communicative purposes. In terms of forms and aesthetics, embroidery may add colour, texture, richness and dimension to the cloth. It may reveal the wearer’s wealth, social status, ethnic identity or systems of belief. For centuries European court dress was often lavishly embroidered as a signifier of status. Additionally, producing embroidery at home for sale has been a mass of economic sustenance for women in many cultures.
Kantha is a type of embroidery typical of eastern South Asia, especially in the Indian states of West Bengal and Odisha and in Bangladesh. Kantha is one of the oldest forms of embroidery …show more content…

The thing that separates this form of needlework embroidery apart from others is the wide use of running stitch, that is known as Kantha.
Yarns that are used for running stitches is often taken from old saree or dhotis and covers almost the entire piece of fabric onto which motifs and designs are embroidered. The repetitive use of the running stitch contributes to Kantha’s signature wrinkled and wavy effect on the fabric.
The study was undertaken with the aim to adapt kantha embroidery, for design development and to represent these designs in the form of garments. Since textile designing is a field where there is always a need for fresh ideas and newer designs, traditional designs of kantha embroidery cannot be ignored.
The designs were collected from various sources like books, internet and newspapers. Five new designs were developed. These five designs were created to check the versality of these designs. One design will be made on the different garments to show how well the designs go on them. Out of which one design will be selected for the development of the garment by our concerned
