In the seventh grade I entered homeroom and knew no one, but that quickly change and suddenly I knew almost everyone. Everyone but my now best friend Elsa Romero. You see whenever I looked or even tried to talk to Elsa she always had an unpleasant expression on her face so I thought it was simply that she didn’t like me, though I now know the reason for that face back then it used to be scary. Furthermore, due to a few other classmates that were friends with Elsa and I we came in contact in gym class. This was the begin for us next she would invite me to join speech and debate leading to our current situation. The person that I chose for the Womens History Month report is Maria Mitchell, who was a self- taught astronomer. She discovered Comet Mitchell and made amazing achievements throughout her life. Maria Mitchell was born on August 1, 1818 on the Massachusetts island of Nantucket to William and Lydia Mitchell. When Maria Mitchell was growing up in the Quaker community, few girls were allowed to study astronomy and higher mathematics. Even though the Mitchell's weren't rich Maria's father, a devoted amateur( most astronomers of that time were amateurs) astronomer, introduced her to mathematics and the night sky. He also encouraged her toward teaching and passed on a sense of God as in the natural world. By the time Maria was sixteen, she was a teacher of mathematics at Cyrus Pierce's school for young ladies where she used to be a student. Following that she opened a grammar school of her own. And only a year after that, at the age of eighteen she was offered a job as a librarian at Nantucket's Atheneum during the day when it opened to the public in the fall of 1836. At the Atheneum she taught herself astronomy by reading books on mathematics and science. At night she regularly studied the sky through her father's telesscope. For her college education even Harvard couldn't have given her a better education than she received at home and at that time astronomy in America was very behind as of today. She kept studying at the Atheneum, discussed astronomy with scientists who visited Nantucket (including William C. Bond), and kept studying the sky through her father's lent telescope.
People who are different and ready for a change can be scary,society is one of the first people scared. Society pushes away people who are different from the norms. This happened in a time overlooked by many people. This was the time the young lords spent in New york. Kids and teenagers banded together to make as much as a difference as possible. Many tried to make a non-violent movement and were still shot down and told to silence their movement. Many middle aged Puerto Ricans raised in the United States disagreed with the action plan of the Young Lords,they believed the young lords were just causing trouble in each city they arrived in. They refuse to allow the idea of change into their mind as well as the minds of their children. They didn’t want the fight to make things worse for Puerto Rico’s freedom.

Through American Literature many writers have given a voice to the once silent. Sandra Cisneros, a writer was one of those contributors. Very few writers of her time, explored and brought to light what she did. She started a movement in the United States and within her community to bring to light the issue that once were overlooked. The Stories, poems, novels and essays she wrote touch the lives of many people, of all walks of life. Cisneros did not have the best childhood but was able to overcome many obstacles through her life. Born in Chicago, Illinois into poverty to her first book The House on Mango street selling more than six million copies (Cisneros, 2017).
Krisi came from Albania to live with my family for a couple of years. I have a lot in common with Krisi, we both are very out of the box thinkers and we both are quite curious and creative people, like two friends playing Minecraft and maybe that was why I felt persuaded to tell her anything and everything I knew. Jennifer Lopez was born in the Bronx, New York on July 24, 1970. She was born in the United States to Puerto Rican Parents, Jennifer considers herself to be a Puerto Rican and she is very proud of her Hispanic heritage and culture. Her father is David Lopez, a computer specialist, and her mother Guadalupe Lopez, a Kindergarten teacher. Her parents recognized Jennifer’s talent and enthusiasm for performing and at the age of five the enrolled her in dance classes. Her mother said “Jennifer always loved to sing, but she was also a great actress and knew that she would have a bright future ahead of her.” With the support of her parents Jennifer grew up to be a very sensible girl, who is still very close to her family. When Jennifer earned her million-dollar paycheck for playing the role in the movie Selena, she bought her mom a Cadillac. Even though they saw Jennifer’s talent at the age of five, their relationship was not always understandable. Jennifer made a major decision and that was not to go to College. That decision was very disappointing to her parents who wanted her to go to law school. Her parents supported her pursuit of a career in show business, they did not wanted to be in the expense of her education. When Jennifer told her parents that she was not going to College and law school, they thought it was really stupid to go off and try to be a movie star.
In the movie Romero, Archbishop Romero changes very much in his understanding of love and in his understanding of true conscience. At first Romero is just a priest who isn’t really concerned about the poor and how they are being oppressed, but when Romero is chosen to be the new Archbishop his friend, who is assassinated, I think has a slight impact on him. But I think when his friend is assassinated is when he really starts to realize what is happening to the country of El Salvador and how the government doesn’t want anyone to speak out about this. So, now Romero is starting to action against the government and tries to speak out against them. Here we see Archbishop Romero’s true conscience and love grow for the people around him because we see him taking more action against the government. I think that Archbishop Romero defines love as helping others who are in need and others who need his help whatever it may be. We see Romero do this when he starts to lead the revolt in trying to tell the El Salvadoran Government to stop oppressing the poor and treat everyone as human beings. I think Romero has to make a very big decision considering, the gorillas were sending out flyers that said “Be a Patriot, Kill a Priest”. The decision that Romero had to make was whether or not to help the poor or just be a puppet for the cardinals that selected him to be a puppet in the beginning. Oscar Romero was at first a quiet, ordinary priest in the democratic country of El Salvador. But things change once newly appointed Arch-Bishop. Romero quickly finds out the way the country is run by the military. The poor people of Salvador are missing and being executed by the military. Romero tries to stop these events through the power of the Church.
November 2nd, 1984. The greatest day ever. November 19th, 2009. The most horrid day ever. Those two days are the two most important days of my life. I will never be able to forget those dates. Now, granted I was not alive on November 2nd, 1984, it was one of the best days ever. That was the day Amanda Jo Peterson was born. I was alive on November 19th, 2009, but yet when I look back, that day makes me feel empty and numb inside. That day makes me wish that people could live forever. Days like that are the days you wish you were emotionless and cold hearted so you wouldn’t feel the devistation I went through. Angela Bassett was born on August 16, 1958, in New York City. Angela Bassett went to the Yale School of Drama and went ahead to star in the Tina Turner biopic What's Love Got to Do With It, for which the on-screen character got an Academy Award designation and a Golden Globe Award. In St. Petersburg, Florida Angela and her sister, D'nette, was raised by her single parent, Betty, a social specialist. On a secondary school trip, she got to be motivated to act in the wake of seeing a Kennedy Center creation of the exemplary story Of Mice and Men.
In 1942, Margaret Walker won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award for her poem For My People. This accomplishment heralded the beginning of Margaret Walker’s literary career which spanned from the brink of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1930s to the cusp of the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s (Gates and McKay 1619). Through her fiction and poetry, Walker became a prominent voice in the African-American community. Her writing, especially her signature novel, Jubilee, exposes her readers to the plight of her race by accounting the struggles of African Americans from the pre-Civil War period to the present and ultimately keeps this awareness relevant to contemporary American society.
When I was in elementary school kids would bully me for my looks and that did affect my life a lot. So I decided to hang out with the “cool” kids the first day of third grade and they all seemed glad that I joined them, after that we would do crazy things that would get us in trouble but in the end I knew that they had my back. One day this random girl came up to me and decided to talk with me, she told me about how she felt and all of her insecurities were taking an advantage of her to become a target for people to bully her. I decided to become friends with her a week after our talk, she had always been by my side since we met. She ended up coming to my house almost everyday and we would have sleepovers when we could, and then one day I decided to tell her one of my biggest insecurities. The next day school started and I was very happy hoping nothing would get in my way, I didn’t see my friend until lunch and as I walked up to her she started to laugh and around the corner all of my friends came and at that moment I didn’t know what was happening until one of my other friends came to me and told me that my “friend” told everyone about my
Friendship: the most important part of our high school years that we cherish the most. Every good friend that has come into our lives, like footsteps that we encounter along a walk on a beach, leaves us with a different perspective of who we really are. The activities that we are involved in throughout high school introduce us to life changing friends. My freshman year, during track, I met one of those special friends. We ran the same distance races; together we shared that special bond as teammates. She's always been an extraordinary athlete, who runs with her heart, who I have always looked up to. At the district championships we were warming down together. I told her how she inspired me and that I felt that she was my hero. The next thing I knew I found myself singing. She made me stop before I could finish, otherwise she would have started to cry.
