Elie's Internal Conflict

There are several instances in the book Night by Elie Wiesel where Elie has an internal conflict about his spirituality. Elie is the witness of many horrors and there are times when he questions God’s presence. However, there are other times where Elie thanks and prays to God. Elie’s beliefs change throughout the course of the book and he is uncertain about what to think. In the beginning, we meet Elie’s master, Moishe the Beadle. Every evening, the two would pray, ask questions, and talk about God. Elie even said, “And in the course of those evenings I became convinced that Moishe the Beadle would help me enter eternity” (Wiesel 5). However things began to change. The foreign Jews were deported from Sighet and a normally singing and chanting Moishe, fell silent. Soon enough German Army vehicles appeared on the streets. During the Eight Day Passover, the Jewish community celebrated. The Bible ordered them to, but everybody was wishing that they could stop pretending.
