Jamestown was almost failure in the beginning. The reason for this: English customs. Due to English customs, the settlers were unprepared to deal with the hardships of creating a colony. 42 percent of the men taken to Jamestown were gentlemen from wealthy families (Document C). These men were not experienced in working with their hands, creating a problem in Jamestown where many of the jobs included hard labor or education in a certain skill. Also, at the time England was a relatively clean country. When the English came to America to establish Jamestown, they were faced with brackish water perfused with diseases (Document A).
